**Our Water Services Department is seeking an Assistant Superintendent, Construction who will supervise construction activities with a focus on leadership, safety, quality. The Assistant Superintendent will work collaboratively with the supervisory team to support and implement safe work practices and initiatives and to provide coordination of construction safety documentation and procedures for critical field work.**

**You are: A motivated self-starter with the ability to multi-task, communicate effectively, meet tight timelines, and contribute positively within a dynamic team environment. Experience managing civil construction projects in water and wastewater transmission is key for this role. Experience working in field safety, focused on utility construction within a municipal environment is an asset.**

**The Assistant Superintendent Construction reports to the Superintendent Construction and falls within our Management / Leadership, Level 2 job family.**

**This role**:

- Manages planned and emergency construction work for a variety of projects including large underground water and wastewater infrastructure. Plans, schedules and directs the work of construction crews and contractors ensuring work is completed to required standards and specifications. Addresses deficiencies, assesses workloads and coordinates the activities to complete projects on time and on budget.
- Contributes to preparing and managing the annual budget and monitors and controls spending ensuring the effective and efficient expenditure of allocated funds. Prepares project budgets and schedules; monitors job sites for cost savings; coordinates work with contractors to mitigate conflicts; and implements strategies and systems to effectively use resources. Contributes to short and long term planning.
- Contributes to the construction review of engineering designs. Reviews plans and provides input on constructability, methodology, budget and duration of work. Discusses matters such as timing, weather, location, staffing and impacts on the public and provides professional input for further consideration.
- Makes decisions or recommendations regarding specific construction methods or approaches, equipment requirements and staffing levels. Manages the work activities of multiple crews in diverse locations and ensures jobs are appropriately staffed.
- Consults with the Superintendent and engineers on the methods of construction for challenges encountered on site. Requests additional information or clarification on plans and coordinates the involvement of external utilities, consulting engineers, contractors and other municipal staff. Liaises with managers regarding sensitive issues surrounding job sites and provides information to and answers questions from the public.
- Communicates regularly with foremen to review work plans; explain requirements; receive status updates; and to provide professional advice and support. Arranges and/or approves trades assistance and reviews and approves requests for materials and equipment.
- Hires, supervises, directs and develops staff, monitoring performance towards division, department, and corporate objectives. Ensures staff adhere to corporate workplace conduct policies. Leads, coaches, and develops staff recognizing the importance of training.
- Ensures safe work procedures are integrated in the work routines of staff and conducts safety meetings and inspections. Continuously monitors work practices in the field noting and addressing issues as they occur. Prepares written safe work and emergency procedures and oversees programs to improve safety.
- Keeps current with new construction methodologies and equipment and ensures work is performed in accordance with current best practices. Provides input and suggestions for divisional strategic planning, decision making and initiatives.
- Performs other related duties as required.

**To be successful, you have**:

- 5 years of recent, relevant experience supplemented by a university degree or diploma in a relevant discipline such as Civil/Structural Engineering Technology; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Courses in water distribution and wastewater collection, business management, construction management and supervision are an asset.
- Sound knowledge of large underground utility construction. Working knowledge of water and wastewater systems operations including the ability to coordinate construction activities in and around the utilities. Demonstrated ability to lead, organize and coordinate the work of others in accordance with best practices and corporate policy.
- Knowledge and understanding of Metro Vancouver’s construction activities, processes and objectives. Ability to provide direction and make recommendations suited to the organization’s business needs.
