Program Leader

The Program Leader assists with implementation, supervision and evaluation of the after school programs. They will assist with program planning which meet the core values of our agency and of BGC Canada (formerly Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada). They will be a positive role model for all youth and will promote the awareness of of our agency in the community.
Our agency provides social recreational programs for 6 - 18 years. We aim to develop and nurture the life skills of youth through community based programming with the support of families and volunteers.
The Program Leader will be 18 years or older; have had previous employment, education, or volunteer experience working with children and youth. This is an ideal position for someone pursuing education in social work, child development, education, psychology, recreation and/or a similar helping field.
Screening & training procedures include:
- a Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check
- a Child Intervention Check
- minimum of 3 references
- Standard first aid with CPR (can be obtained once hired)
- Completion of online modules through BGC Canada
- Orientation of procedures and policies
Key skills include physical activity, leadership, communication, patience, and conflict resolution skills. This position requires the Program Leader to actively engage in the planned activities, to connect with the youth through active listening, and to inspire the youth to strive for their full potential.
The Program Leader will be supervised by the Program Coordinator, and will always work in a team with staff and screened volunteers. General hours of this position are Monday, Thursday & Friday from 2 - 6pm, and Wednesday may be added depending on registration numbers. There are additional hours for special events, and for day camps when students have PD Days (generally run 9am-4pm) Some additional hours are required for staff training, and this is paid time.
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
- **Program Planning, Implementation, Supervision and Evaluation**:
- Will assist in planning, implementation and evaluation of after school programs
- Will plan non-competitive activities which enhance members self-esteem and meet the needs of the individual members in the program
- Will seek input from members as to program content
- Will complete daily and year end evaluations of programs
- **Supervision of Staff and/or Volunteers**:
- Will assist with the supervision, skill development and evaluation of junior leaders as they volunteer within the programs.
- **Volunteer Recruitment**:
- Will actively recruit volunteers for all areas of the HYC and work cooperatively in forwarding information regarding volunteer opportunities at the HYC.
- Will use junior leaders whenever possible to enhance their leadership skills
- **Administration / Funding**:
- Maintain accurate daily statistics of youth involved in the programs
- Contribute to HYC promotion and programs as required
- **Other**:
- HYC’s success relies in the ability of all staff, volunteers and youth to work together whether it is a fundraiser, a program or a special event. All staff will assist and help other staff or Board members for activities when required.
**General Responsibilities**
The Program Leader will respect the confidentiality of the HYC members and volunteers at all times. The Summer Program Leader will report any suspected cases of physical, emotional, mental and/or sexual abuse to the Program Director, who will in turn report to the Executive Director, the Chairperson, and to the appropriate authority.
**Job Type**: Part-time
Pay: $15.00-$18.00 per hour
Expected hours: 12 - 18 per week
Schedule:
- 4 hour shift
- Monday to Friday
