A regular full-time vacancy exists in the Parks Department for an Assistant Irrigation Systems Worker. The incumbent of this position will perform maintenance work on irrigation systems and turf areas as well as operate and program the municipality’s central control computerized irrigation system - the Toro Sentinel WMS Water management System. Working independently or in conjunction with a superior the incumbent will check the operation of and perform routine maintenance, repair and replacement tasks on a variety of irrigation systems**. **The incumbent checks the operation of and performs routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on hydraulic and electric irrigation systems, sport field lighting, clocks and related equipment; performs a variety of cultivation and maintenance tasks of turf areas such as over-seeding, top dressing, fertilization, liming aerating, cutting and returfing; lays out and marks sports fields, and operates a variety of turf maintenance equipment, including a one-ton van used to transport staff and supplies. The incumbent will also conduct field inspections and may supervise the work of a small group of subordinates.

The successful applicants will have

• Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair of hydraulic and electric automatic and quick-coupling irrigations system, as well as turf cultivation and maintenance and in the laying out of sports fields;
• Sound knowledge of the hazards and of the safety precautions applicable to the work;
• Ability to perform a variety of irrigation systems maintenance and repair tasks and to lay pipe at the required depth and grade; ability to perform cultivation, maintenance and repair tasks to turf areas and to lay out sports fields according to required specifications; and ability to operate a variety of turf maintenance equipment;
• Ability to supervise the work of a small group of subordinates assisting in irrigation systems and turf maintenance duties;
• Ability to read, interpret and/or maintain a variety of records, maps, blueprints and manufacturers’ maintenance manuals related to the work;
• Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the work.

**Qualifications**

Completion of Grade 10 supplemented by technical courses or seminars in irrigation systems and grass field maintenance plus considerable related experience or and equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid BC Driver’s License and A. W. W. A Cross Connection Certificate is required.
