Inclusionary Engagement Planning Intern

The intern will work within the Planning Information Services and Civic Addressing group of Strategic Projects, under the supervision of the Principal Planner. A key component of this role is engagement with traditionally under-represented communities and to help review and amend HRMs Civic Addressing policies and procedures to better reflect the diversity, history, and inclusivity of the Region as outlined in the Culture and Heritage Priorities Plan.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Assists in the evaluation of existing and proposed community boundaries, commemorative names, and asset renaming projects;
- Assists in reviewing and making recommendations to the Civic Addressing;
- Coordinator on engagement for asset renaming or boundary adjustment projects;
- Supports and may assist in the preparation of detailed reports and recommendations on asset renaming’s to boards, committees and Council;
- Organizes and facilitates engagement sessions with various groups and communities;
- Work with internal (Diversity and Inclusion & Parks and Recreation) and external groups to receive feedback and direction on policy changes;
- Supports and may facilitate with oversight public meetings representing the business unit on assigned project matters;
- Identifies emerging planning and engagement issues, assesses the required resources, and develops strategies and policy to address them;
- Conducts urban and regional planning research involving quantitative analysis, descriptive statistics, demographic analysis, and geospatial analysis and field survey methods;
- Responds to information requests in a professional and timely manner;
- Develops and implements consultation processes with traditionally under-represented communities and in particular indigenous and African Nova Scotian topics; and
- May preform other rated duties as assigned.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Education and Experience**:
- University or Diploma degree from an accredited planning program
- University degree from a non-accredited but related program (such as Urban, Human or Economic Geography, and Geographic/Spatial Information Systems)
- Volunteer experience with community groups, not-for-profit organizations or social enterprises that support community development is considered an asset
**Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities**:
- Knowledge of best practice in public engagement, facilitation and consultation;
- Experience with public speaking and communicating with the public;
- Expertise in equity, diversity and inclusion, anti-racism, power and privilege, accessibility, or human rights work;
- Understanding of the cultural diversity among African Nova Scotians and African descent people within the Halifax Regional Municipality and in Canada
- Knowledge of culturally appropriate ways of working with underrepresented groups as outline in Culture & Heritage Priority Plan;
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
- Experience in a government, public-sector, or non-profit environment is considered as asset.

**WORK STATUS**: Full Time - Temporary up to 12 months
**HOURS OF WORK**: Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 35 hours per week
**SALARY**: $50,000 per year
**WORK LOCATION**: 3rd Floor of Duke Tower (5251 Duke St, Halifax)
