Lead Research Chemist

**Job Summary**:
Reporting to the Manager of Technology Development, the Lead Research Chemist will be responsible for technical competence and contributing the advancement of research at Li-Cycle. This role will include designing laboratory experiments, providing direction to technical staff conducting experiments, and reporting on experimental results to the Technology and Executive leadership teams.
**Primary Responsibilities**:
- Provide technical oversight and support drafting laboratory test plans, overseeing test work, and preparing and/or reviewing written and oral technical reports describing the details of the test work results.
- Lead the design, development, optimization and scale-up of processes in collaboration with other team members.
- Contribute to the planning of pilot plant trials and oversee operation of and reporting of pilot plant trial results.
- Prepare and/or review test procedures, Health & Safety practices, and training documents, including SOPs for laboratory equipment and methods including maintenance, calibration, and operation.
- Identify innovative value adding opportunities, and contribute to the development of new processes, products, services, and technologies.
- Collaborate with all Technology teams and the broader Li-Cycle organization to evaluate and new technologies and processes at the laboratory and pilot scale.
- High level and critical analysis of scientific results, prepare technical reports and high-level recommendation, and identify improvements and optimization methods.
- Enhance industry knowledge by keeping up-to-date with relevant technical literature in the lithium-ion battery recycling industry.
- Help mentor and lead a team of research engineers, scientists and technologists in research and development activities.
**Job Qualifications**:
- 7+ years of experience hydrometallurgical or equivalent experience.
- Be practical and hands-on when it comes to technical oversight, drafting & overseeing test work, and preparing and/or reviewing written and oral technical reports.
- Advanced degree in chemistry or other physical sciences, or chemical or metallurgical engineering, or 5 years of research experience equivalent to post-graduate work in one of these areas.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Chemist (P.Chem.).
- Working knowledge of commercial hydrometallurgical processes.
- 5+ years of experience in conducting test work in a research laboratory or testing facility.
- Experience in developing of experiments and high-level data analysis.
- Good time management, with ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to convey project. technical information to project managers, clients, and peers.
- Interested in innovation, sustainability, safety, and quality.
- Knowledge of IP considered an asset.
- Strong work ethic.
