**Plant Sciences Undergraduate Summer Technician**:
**PLSC Summer Student - Ecology Lab**
**Primary Purpose**: Grasslands (both rangelands and pastures) cover tens of millions of hectares in Canada. They provide forage for the livestock industry and play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and maintenance of diverse ecosystem services. Unfortunately, grasslands are under extreme threat, with large areas lost or degraded every year. Our research is at the forefront of enhancing our understanding of grassland services and identifying management interventions to ensure these services can be maintained. The projects being worked on by our research team include:
- A prairies-wide initiative to quantify native plant and microbe contributions to ecosystem services (biomass production, carbon sequestration, pollination, pest control, etc.)
- Manipulation of soils to control invasive plants in range and pasture systems
- Multiple projects, including a local grazing trial, where we will look at how grazing influences the soil microbiome and microbial effects on plant growth
- A field trial integrating native plant species into pasture
- Various other greenhouse and field experiments evaluating variation in soil microbe effects on plant growth
**Typical Duties or Accountabilities**:Open to working flexible hours as needed and available for field work travel within Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Accommodations can be made if this is not possible. Interested in grassland, forage, or ecological research, strong attention to detail and ability to work with a dynamic team
