**The Opportunity**

The Cook plays a lead role in kitchen operations and in preparing banquet event orders. The Cook is also responsible for ensuring that food is handled and prepared according to legislated policies and procedures. Specifically, this position is responsible for:

- Preparing food for the cafeteria, meetings and events.
- Taking the lead in preparing food menus and in developing recipes that accommodate dietary restrictions.
- Interacting with customers and Food Services staff about menu substitutions and the related costs.
- Ensuring that ovens, freezers, coolers, deep fryers, broilers and other kitchen equipment are clean.
- Placing, receiving and inspecting grocery and supply orders.
- Maintaining inventories of food and supplies.
- Taking the lead in kitchen operations and training casual staff
- Developing the weekly cafeteria menu in consultation with the Food and Beverage Services Supervisor.
- In the absence of the Food and Beverage Services Supervisor, taking the lead in all Food Services operations.
- Meeting with vendors to review products and supplies.
- Assisting front-end staff in preparing catering orders, cleaning up, serving, cashiering and working in the dish room.
- Receiving front-end grocery and supply orders as required.
- Collaborating with Food Services staff to maintain a clean and safe working environment.
- Helping to manage safety concerns in Food Services.

**If you have**:

- Valid Red Seal Cook certification.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience working as a lead cook.
- Menu-planning experience.
- Experience being a leader and dealing with the public.
- Experience in a fine dining or high-end catering environment is an asset.
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System Certification.
- A Safe Food Handling certificate.
- A Pro-Serve certificate is an asset.
- Extensive knowledge of the food and beverage industry and of kitchen safety procedures.
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- Good knife-handling skills.
- Good organizational and time-management skills.
- The ability to follow and prepare standardized recipes.
- The ability to read and write orders, menus and recipes and to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
- The ability to remain calm during busy periods and in the presence of difficult customers.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 kilograms and push up to 50 kilograms.
