Position Context:
Reporting to the Associate Director of Design Services
- Under the supervision of the Manager, Technical Design, will oversee the Building Technologist group and provide technical assistance to the architect’s group. The goal is to ensure comprehensive and complete sets of plans and specifications for McGill Facilities projects. The incumbent will be a key member of the design team, responsible for interpreting user needs, reconciling building constraints, planning priorities, and building code requirements, and translating them into construction detailing, drawing conventions, and specifications. They will verify that designs comply with building codes and other applicable legislation.
Typical projects include leading-edge research laboratories, multimedia active learning classrooms, teaching laboratories, service infrastructure renewals, and building envelope renovations.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Manage the technical team (5 employees) to ensure project deliverables are produced on time, within budget, and to client satisfaction.
- Develop and manage technical projects (interior renovation, maintenance, building envelope, etc.).
- Conduct construction site supervision for multiple simultaneous projects.
- Ensure quality review of all contractual documentation, including technical plans, specifications, and legal documents related to design and construction projects.
- Develop technical aspects of project design and standards for the University.
- Provide senior professional expertise to help clients define their needs and develop architectural design programs in consultation with users and other University constituencies.
- Manage the production of fully coordinated architectural working documents, including drawings and specifications, and revise existing working drawings as required.
- Provide professional services from design development through to project completion.
- Collaborate with all project team parties to ensure successful project completion.
- Consult with McGill stakeholders to develop construction standards and monitor design and construction work to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Develop design processes, review and quality processes, tools, and templates to facilitate the technical team's activities.
- Define strategic direction of the unit in collaboration with the Director and oversee the implementation of short
- and long-term plans related to construction and renovation projects.
- Manage and report on financials, time, and staff assignments in conjunction with the internal fees recovery policy.
- Develop standard architectural details and unit-related policies for document preparation.
- Ensure designs comply with the Quebec Construction Code and provide code interpretation.
- Participate in the implementation of new processes and initiatives that foster innovation and update skills and knowledge.
Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities:
- Membership in the Order of Architects of Quebec (OAQ) is required.
- Experience as a Project Leader is preferable.
- Strong customer-service focus and ability to provide direction and assistance to clients.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong working knowledge of Canadian construction industry practices and procedures.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian construction technology and architectural design conventions.
- Knowledge of the Quebec Construction Code and the National Building Code of Canada.
- Proven ability to multitask and stay organized.
- Proficiency in MS Office and advanced working knowledge of AutoCAD, REVIT, and visual programs such as InDesign, Enscape, and SketchUp.
- Good knowledge of current technology and building codes related to institutional construction and renovation, with experience in laboratory design or educational institutions.
- LEED and WELL certification are considered assets.
- Proficiency in English and French, both spoken and written.
- Creativity, design sensibility, and the ability to bring new approaches and leading-edge solutions to clients.
- Knowledge of French and English:_ _McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 3 on a scale of 0-4._
