Reporting to the Manager, Student Rights & Responsibilities (MSRR), the Student Rights & Responsibilities Officer (SRRO) is responsible for investigations of student non-academic behaviour under several policies including, but not limited to Student Code of Conduct and Discrimination and Harassment Policy. They address student behaviour in a developmental/educational manner with the goal of fostering accountability, good citizenship and personal integrity of students. Guided by procedural fairness and outlined College processes, the Student Rights and Responsibilities Officer thoroughly investigates all non-academic behavioural incidents, documents all aspects of the cases, interviews all parties involved and makes decisions regarding outcomes and corrective actions.
The Student Rights and Responsibilities officer will have a good understanding of on and off campus resources, referring students to appropriate supports and or alternative processes such as case management (Care Team), Threat Assessment etc., were necessary. They work with the Manager to research best practices and adapt/develop policy and processes that reflect the needs of students and promote a safe and respectful environment. The Student Rights and Responsibilities Officer is also required to consult with community members related to complex behaviour situations and provide workshops and seminars to the college community regarding all aspects of the Students Rights and Responsibilities Office, College expectations and the associated disciplinary processes.
**What You’ll Be Doing**
- Investigating and adjudicating student behavioural reports and incidents at Sheridan;
- Conducting all processes related to the non-academic student conduct procedures and managing complex non-academic student incident reports;
- Ensuring appropriate, thorough and procedurally fair investigations are conducted, including, effective communication to all parties, conducting interviews, maintaining notes, reviewing all relevant information to support investigations, report/letter writing and liaising with other departments;
- Meeting and consulting with relevant parties to ensure student concerns are addressed in a timely manner;
- Adjudicating cases and assigning educational and developmental sanctions as appropriate, including decisions concerning verbal and written warnings, non-academic probation, and Behavioural Agreements, while ensuring rights remain intact;
- Completing investigations, summary of findings and crafting recommendations concerning suspension, expulsion and unique disciplinary situations;
- Consulting regularly and conducting progress meetings with students who are on non-academic probation or on a behavioral agreement to ensure they are meeting all conditions of their sanction;
- Referring students to College areas based on needs determined through conduct and progress meetings;
- Providing communication and effective analysis regarding sensitive student issues;
- Meeting with police, victim services, external supports, parents and lawyers, as appropriate;
- Providing consultation to College staff on how to manage high-risk and/or complex student cases;
- Receiving and responding to cases which do not meet policy violations, but require response, triage and/or referral;
- Receiving reports related to student wellbeing including homelessness, worrisome behaviour, missing students, domestic abuse, mental health and suicide concerns;
- Triaging cases to ensure timely referrals and documenting the risk and protective factors in place to support referral choice;
- Managing $200 petty cash per campus to assist with concerns including no food, lack of funds for transportation;
- Creating safety plans for students who have been the victim of a conduct incident or are feeling unsafe due to external factors (i.e. supporting restraining orders and court conditions);
- Managing records, information and reporting;
- Maintaining files on all disciplinary cases, tracking sanctions and follow-up discussions; entering all case information into an online system to preserve confidential information and for statistical purposes;
- Analyzing data and generating reports regarding trends of behavioural issues and associated discipline procedures;
- Developing and presenting seminars/workshops for the College community such as: student rights and responsibilities, the Student Code of Conduct, College policies, student disciplinary processes, appeals;
- Research student information, best practices, educational resources for students (i.e. fire safety, drug and alcohol resources, safety tips, legislative changes);
- Performing other related duties and project, as required.
