The BSO Recreationist works under the direction of the Program Manager and in collaboration with the Manager
of Cognitive Care (MOCC) to practically assess and implement interventions and care strategies with a focus on
the care of residents demonstrating responsive behaviours. The role plans, facilitates, educates, and
implements purposeful individualized therapeutic recreation activities and interventions using a variety of
techniques (Teepa Snow, Dementiability Methods) and a variety of modalities including arts and crafts, music,
dance, games, etc to help maintain or improve the resident’s physical, social, and emotional well-being.
**MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Enhances the positive impact and use of the BSO Program with interdisciplinary team members to assist in
addressing and preventing responsive behaviours through therapeutic programming
- Performs intentional and spontaneous interventions directly with residents on all home areas, assisting
frontline staff with methods and activities to safely accommodate responsive behaviours in a way that allows
residents’ meaningful engagement
- Work in collaboration with all necessary departments to find the best possible quality resident centered care
solutions for the resident/family
- Plans, facilitates and implements purposeful individualized therapeutic recreation activities and interventions
founded on interest, need and ability in accordance with established policies, primary care and clinical team
collaboration, and overall plan of care and within the scope of practice
- Implements best practices in treating dementia, delirium and mental health issues, and awareness of the
effect of these issues have on persons, families and caregivers
- Protection of individual’s rights and advocacy role for the residents
- Adhere to Trinity Village/LHKW’s Mission, Vision, and Values, and follow all organizational policies and
procedures
- Adhere to the following initiatives for this role: Eden Alternative Philosophy of Care, Green Environmental
Initiatives, and CARF Accreditation standards
- Choose attitudes and behaviours that are aligned with the Code of Conduct and Ethics, and ensure the
health and safety of yourself and others at all times
- Remain compliant to all legislative bodies as required by Trinity Village/LHKW, and report as required
TASKS & DUTIES:
- Participate with frontline staff and the BSO team in the assessment and evaluation process to help determine
the best care approach for individual residents
- Coach and assist staff in a variety of behavioural interventions, care approaches, and skills that will help with
their interactions with residents as determined by the assessment and evaluation process
- Collaborate with frontline employees to obtain the most current condition and patterns of residents in order to
assess the source of behaviours and work together with them to determine appropriate personalized
approaches
- Develop resident specific care plans to further assist in those residents exhibiting responsive behaviours/or
at risk.
- Be visible and present on the houses to assist staff with pre-determined or spontaneous interventions based
on the BSO caseload and those residents with low ISE experiencing boredom, loneliness and helplissness. - Proactively assist on each unit to help with programs and/or spontaneous interventions and activities that helps handle responsive behaviours based on BSO principles and best practices - Observe and assist with assessments where applicable in order to determine a course of action and interventions that are person-centred and based on best BSO practices - Collaborate well with a multi-disciplinary team to gain current and specialized information regarding each resident, care approaches, and possible available resources - Document appropriate resident information in accordance with BSO requirements in PCC as well as any attendance in activities in ActivityPro. - Communicate verbally and in writing any l information regarding a variety of interventions including: behavioural patterns, timing, and individual interventions. - Collaborate with the BSO team regarding observation and modeling to determine approaches, and intervene in moments where staff may be defiant or uncooperative in order to assist with guiding staff for success - Report any issues or concerns with staff behaviours regarding BSO interventions and interactions to the Program Manager and MOCC - Submit data in accordance with Trinity Village policies regarding resident information and other relevant data for accurate CQI - Attend care conferences (only as required to provide input regarding specific resident needs and situations. - If new residents have documented behaviours, help determine and communicate a plan with appropriate care providers for a smooth transition into the home. - Collaborate with Program Manager and MOCC to assist with new residents transitioning to LTC, those who are on the BSO caseload
