Recreation Operations Technician Aquatics

The Recreation Operations Technician - Aquatics plays a crucial role in efficiently operating, maintaining, and repairing specialized aquatic systems and equipment across Strathcona County recreation facilities and recirculating spray parks. This position demands a deep understanding and expertise in the facility environment, specifically regarding filtration systems, water quality management, chemical feed systems, and chlorination processes. The technician takes the initiative to develop and maintain robust operational initiatives, ensuring that these specialized aquatic systems and equipment consistently perform safely and at peak efficiency
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Maintain the overall condition of aquatic systems and equipment at Strathcona County aquatic facilities by overseeing the inspections, preventative maintenance programs and repairs ensuring the lifespans of these systems are maximized and are able to provide safe, high-quality services for all guests
- Participate in the development of protocols for daily and long-term operations, care and maintenance of specialized equipment and systems
- Oversee the repairs & maintenance needs of specialized equipment such as filter tanks, chlorination systems, booster pumps, and chemical feed pumps
- Support the aquatic shutdown process by providing recommendations on required work and participate in the planning and executing phases of the shutdowns
- Maintain a tracking program within the asset management framework and database for all aquatic specialized systems and equipment at Strathcona County aquatic centres to ensure proper planning, repairs and replacement are completed. Provide progress reports on all aspects of aquatic operations, contracted projects and services
- Perform regular inspections at Strathcona County aquatic centres.
- Work collaboratively with the Lifeguard IV in providing training support to the Lifeguard II & III to ensure they are able to complete the day-to-day operational tasks such as water tests, backwashing, pool draining, and pool filling
- Oversee and coordinate the aquatic operations of the Strathcona County Recirculating Spray Parks, including seasonal shutdowns and start-ups
- Assist in the training of the hourly staff on the daily operations of the recirculating spray parks and on trouble shooting solutions to filtration and spray feature/amenity issues that may arise
- Work collaboratively with Facility Services, facility staff, and contractors to coordinate preventative maintenance, repairs and replacement of aquatic systems and equipment
**Qualifications and Skills**:
- Post-secondary diploma or certificate in a related field
- Minimum 4 years' experience working in a fast-paced Aquatic Facility
- Familiarity with basic trade practices particularly in building and/or mechanical trades
- Understanding OH&S code and requirements, work hazards and Safe Work Practices & Procedures
- Knowledge of water quality standards, Alberta Health standards and what steps to take to resolve water quality issues
- Excellent skills in the areas of filtration systems, chlorination system, wapotec system, acid barrel changes, jib crane operations, pallet jack operations, scissor lift operations, chemical feed pump operations and replacement, priming pumps, draining and filling pools and water testing/monitoring
- Strong critical thinking and facilitation skills
- Ability to research and determine manufacturers and industry standard maintenance protocols for aquatic systems and equipment
- Ability to determine priority for the replacement, repairs, and upgrades based on system conditions and functional needs
- Ability to diagnose causes of equipment failures and identify potential problems
- Valid Standard First Aid and CPR and WHMIS certifications
- Lift training and fall arrest training is an asset
- Confined space training is an asset
- Pool Operators Level 1 and 2 is required
- OH&S courses/certifications an asset. Courses could include Understanding the OH&S Act & Regulations, Hazard Assessment, Incident Reporting & Investigation and Formal Worksite Planned Inspections.
- Experience working with an online asset management program is an asset
**Conditions of Employment**:
- Submission of a Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
- Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time
