Ambassador

The Waterfront District Business Improvement Area (BIA) is a not-for-profit association of the property owners and businesses. Our Ambassadors will be performing four main functions this summer.

The primary function is **tourism and hospitality assistance**. These individuals will be interacting with the public and providing directions around the rejuvenation construction in the area (underground infrastructure replacement) and drawing people to the Waterfront District BIA businesses.

The second function, tying directly with tourism and hospitality, is assisting with **marketing**, specifically - social media.

The third function is **general maintenance and cleanliness of the area** (an ongoing task of picking up garbage and disposing of it in the proper receptacles) as we continue to work to bring recycling initiatives into the area.

Lastly, the Ambassadors will assist in **planning and executing interactive events** for children during the summer months, with a number of these events relating to the ongoing construction.

The BIA Ambassadors will work as teams of two and will walk the BIA (downtown area) every day. During these walkabouts, wearing Waterfront District BIA branded clothing, the Ambassadors will engage with the people who live, work and are visiting the area; they will be educating, engaging, and connecting people to services/ resources and tourist attractions in the area. These teams will also be creating fun and interactive activities on the sidewalks to engage people throughout the day. On rainy days the Ambassadors will be able to base themselves in the BIA office or the Historical Thunder Bay Pagoda and assist with the tourist endeavours of Tourism Thunder Bay.

The Ambassador teams will welcome residents and Tourists to Thunder Bay and promote Local Thunder Bay Activities and businesses. These actions are critical for enhancing and strengthening business and social agency relationships and positive community impacts. The Ambassadors program has been established to correlate with the significant development and revitalization of our downtown north core. Ambassador teams are one way to build community well-being and enhance the public relations of our city and BIA. The Ambassadors are an extra set of eyes on the street, connecting residents, businesses and visitors to the information, support, and services they need. All these contribute to making our business district more approachable and safer for everyone and keep the BIA Board informed on concerns within the area.

The Ambassadors will also play a key role in supporting local and regional tourism development by helping cruise ship passengers, with no knowledge of the area, find their way around during construction and regular use of the area. Additionally, they will assist 170+ small businesses by planning activities and opportunities for people from all various demographics during the lengthy construction. They will also support projects that support persons with disabilities (downtown renewal construction project).

**Qualifications**: The Ambassador must be punctual, self-motivated, responsible and reliable, have solid organizational skills and be able to work under mínimal supervision. Must be physically able to perform the tasks necessary for the job as required.

**Work Environment**: Will work outdoors each day, and must be able to work in all types of weather conditions.

**Physical Demands**: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move 20 pounds.

**Hours of Work**: part-time 30 hours a week for 8 weeks

**Hourly Rate**: $17.55 per hour

**Applicants must be**:

- was registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year;
- is a student in a secondary, post-secondary, CEGEP (Quebec only), vocational or technical program;
- is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or a person whom refugee protection has been conferred under the _Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*_and;
- is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
