**Purpose**:
Reporting to the Senior Payroll Officer of the Ottawa Heart Institute Research Corporation, within the Human Resources team, the Payroll Officer’s key responsibilities include performing all the necessary input and verification to issue an accurate full cycle bi-weekly payroll, as well as analyze, verify and record all requests for remuneration, ensuring they conform with legislative requirements and OHIRC policies, while respecting due dates.

The Payroll Officer works with other key members in order to collaborate in the implementation of strategic efforts. In addition, the Payroll Officer fosters and maintains effective working relationships with colleagues and clients.

**Responsibilities**:

- Ensures compliance to all applicable laws and regulations governing the area of Payroll Management.
- Performs the data entry, verification and payroll system operations necessary to issue the full cycle bi-weekly pay accurately and on time along with the associated remittances.
- Gathers, verifies and maintains the payroll data file of all personnel, with regards to work status changes, budget, benefits, payroll and other information as required. Ensures the reconciliation of the electronic personnel files.
- Performs appropriate calculations, interprets and analyzes the impact of remuneration requests, changes or errors and affects the payroll accordingly.
- Responds to inquiries from employees, managers, various government agencies and other authorities, produces reports, explains and corrects payroll data as necessary.
- Assists in the year end processes including but not limited to the analysis of the results, validation and correction within the prescribed time, the preparation of year end information returns to the various government agencies and dissemination of staff tax forms.
- Ensures benefit documentation is completed, verified, data entered into the HRIS, implemented and reconciled/audited on a regular basis.
- Provides troubleshooting assistance and guidance in the use of the HRIS to the staff including assistance in ensuring all employees have access to their pay statements in due time.

**Basic Requirements**:

- College or undergraduate degree in relevant program.
- 2 years of experience in processing a full cycle payroll using an internal HRIS.
- Being or working toward becoming a member of the National Payroll Institute is an asset.

**Competencies**:

- Strong business, finance and accounting knowledge and experience.
- Keen attention to detail and an ability to identify errors in financial style reports.
- Exceptional analysis skills.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to use accounting or payroll software.
- Able to learn/use a variety of electronic tools/platforms (Intra net, HRIS, etc.).
- Excellent customer service.
- Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
- Demonstrated reliability and adaptability.
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills - Word / Excel.

**Suitability**:

- Superb ethical integrity when working with confidential and financial information.
- Comfortable working independently most of the time but willing and able to work collaboratively.
- Able to grasp and adapt workflows, detail oriented, organized.
- Ensures quality and timeliness of the work requirements.
- Good data entry skills.
- Able to juggle many ongoing priorities.
- Bilingualism is an asset.
