Job Summary
The incumbent will perform experiments, write reports and present results at laboratory meetings. The incumbent will perform administrative duties for the laboratory.

Organizational Status

The incumbent will report directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Yossef Av-Gay. Undergraduate students may on occasion report to the incumbent.

Work Performed

Set up, maintain, provide supplies, test experiment and participate in experiments development for Dr. Av-Gay's laboratory.

Set up, tests, operate and maintain common laboratory and other equipment.

Planning and performing microbiology and infection experiments in a containment level 2 laboratory, utilizing complex high content and high throughput screening procedures or techniques.

Troubleshooting problems; collecting records, analyze and interpret experimental results.

Assist Dr. Av-Gay and trainees with the design of experiments and/or development of new techniques.

Provide training to undergraduate students and new technicians in the use of equipment, techniques and procedures.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Work is subject to check by Dr. Av-Gay. Errors in carrying out experiments would result in invalid data. Incorrect decisions would jeopardize the validity of the projects, or delay ongoing work.

Supervision Received
Works under general supervision of Dr. Av-Gay; receives detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and thereafter only on new or unusual problems.

Supervision Given

The incumbent may distribute work assignments to employees at lower classification levels and initiate new employees into routines, procedures and operation of equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of an MSc degree in a microbiology, biochemistry or experimental medicine. Proven record of first author papers in biological chemistry relevant journals. Demonstrate an understanding of the work being done in the laboratory and the ability to write clearly in the style needed for science journals. Show ability to plan and complete work assignments without ongoing direction.
