The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. Job Summary
The University of British Columbia (UBC) offers 76 specialty and sub-specialty training programs. Clinical training is widely distributed throughout the province of British Columbia. All residency training programs are recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada. UBC also offers Clinical Fellowship training in specialized areas, with over 400 clinical fellowship trainees as well as 20 trainees in 14 Area of Focused Competence accredited programs.
Trainee Wellness and support has been identified as a priority of the office of the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education and has approved the addition of a Counsellor position to focus on and support the well-being of Clinical Fellowship trainees, and to offer counselling support to those encountering difficulties during their clinical fellowship training.
The position is a 1.0 FTE (35 hours/week). The position will require working 1 evening per week in addition to daytime working hours. Days of work are flexible but in-office days will be agreed upon in collaboration with the other counselors and consideration of office availability. This position will also have a focus on supporting trainees virtually at all distributed sites across BC. Some local area travel will be required to provide in-person support at various offices across the Lower Mainland.
Organizational Status
Directly reports to the PGME Senior Manager, Learner Support, and takes direction from the Director of Administration, PGME. Takes high level strategic direction about the fellowship portfolio from the PGME Counselling Office Director and the PGME Fellowships Lead.
Work Performed
The Clinical Fellow Counsellor implements the vision of the office of Resident Counselling and Peer Support (RCAPS) by:
1. Providing solution focused confidential counselling support to Postgraduate Clinical Fellows who are facing personal and professional challenges in their training:
a. Trainee Resilience
b. Fatigue Management
c. Time Management
d. Counselling for trainees in distress or academic difficulty
e. Enhancing well-being and performance
f. Managing transitions and change through their Fellowship Training
2. Identifying existing programs, resources and services.
3. Providing intake assessments and referral services to internal and external resources for on-going care.
4. Developing and implementing outreach services to ensure all trainees in the province have access to the services provided by the Resident Counselling and Peer Support Office.
5. Travelling to distributed sites to offer in-person counseling and other RCAP office initiatives.
6. Maintaining accurate and timely documentation of trainee counselling notes and forms within RCAPS office guidelines and processes.
7. Works closely with the Resident Counsellors professionals to create, develop, and deliver educational programs and workshops as required, for trainees, faculty and staff to promote trainee wellness on topics relevant to trainee well-being.
8. Supporting other Postgraduate Medical Trainees, including residents, as may be required for operational considerations.
9.Other duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
- Exercises professional judgment in the provision of counselling/coaching services.
- Exercises initiative and professionalism in the development and delivery of educational and outreach programs.
- The Clinical Fellows Counsellor must maintain the highest of professional standards in the delivery of the services while maintaining confidentiality of all times.
Supervision Received
Reports directly to the PGME Senior Manager, Learner Support for all employment and PGME operational matters, and takes strategic direction on the portfolio from the PGME Faculty Leads, as well as the PGME Deans and Administrative Director. Works independently within the Counselling portfolio with a broad mandate, while collaborating regularly with the other RCAPS Counsellors on initiatives and operational office objectives. Work is reviewed as required to ensure the goals and objectives of the Resident RCAPS Office are being met and that clinical and ethical guidelines are being followed. Monthly external clinical case supervision provided.
Supervision Given
Provides direction to and collaborates with the RCAPS Administrative support role, who reports directly to the PGME Senior Manager, Learner Support.
Minimum Qualifications
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own.
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Master's degree in Counselling Psychology or a related field. Eligible for professional certification in British Columbia. Minimum of five years of experience in Clinical Counselling plus experience supervising Master's level practicum students
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification as a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the B.C. Association of Clinical Counsellors, the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, the British Columbia College of Social Workers or as a Registered Psychologist with the BC Association of Psychologists is required
- Experience working with trauma and high pressure performance scenarios.
- Ability to exercise judgment, tact, discretion, sensitivity to confidential matters.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a supportive environment
- Ability to compose correspondence, reports, presentations and other written materials using clear concise business English.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and written
- Ability to provide effective and appropriate guidance and counsel.
- Demonstrated commitment to life long learning and professional development.
- Ability to approach interactions with an awareness of sensitive issues (e.g. issues concerning specific cultures}.
- Superior interpersonal, oral and written skills.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering professional workshops in a clinical educational environment is an asset
- Demonstrated experience working with Physician groups in a clinical educational environment is preferred.
- Confidence presenting in front of large groups (i.e. at Medical Conferences}.
- Demonstrated decision-making skills in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated skill in inter-professional group facilitation.
- Experience with strategic goal setting is an asset.
- Effective teamwork skills and tolerance for ambiguity is preferred.
- Ability to set priorities and work schedules to meet deadlines.
