Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cell Therapy for Diabetes at UBC
The Department of Surgery at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) to join a dynamic and multidisciplinary team under the supervision of Dr. Francis Lynn. The successful candidate will work on a project developing cell-based therapies for those living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The Lynn Lab at UBC ) studies how insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells develop and function and applies this knowledge to the generation of stem cell-based therapies for T1D.
Project: In persons with T1D, the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas are destroyed by one's own immune system. Insulin remains the best treatment, but even with close glucose monitoring and insulin administration, persons with diabetes still face complications. A cure for diabetes may lie in the replacement of insulin-producing cells by transplantation. Hundreds of patients worldwide have received transplants of islets enabling better blood glucose control without the need for insulin administration. Yet because there are not enough organ donors, new sources of insulin-producing cells are needed for the millions living with this disease. Moreover, most islet transplants fail within a few years, requiring patients to return to insulin injections. Two recent advances may transform cell therapy in diabetes. First, human insulin-producing cells can now be generated from stem cells in a laboratory dish within a few weeks. Second, the genes of cells can be engineered to produce proteins that may enhance their survival and function.
The PDF will edit the genome of human embryonic stem cells in order to make insulin-producing cells that will function better and survive longer upon transplantation into persons with type 1 diabetes. This will involve adding genes that will protect beta cells from stress, inflammation and adaptive immunity. These modified cells will first be tested by transplantation into models of human diabetes. We are well-poised to move these cells into clinical trial, as our team includes leaders in cell manufacturing and clinical cell therapy. The goal is to produce a new and improved cell source for cell replacement therapy in T1D.
Candidate: We are open to hiring stem cell or developmental biologists, islet biologists, molecular biologists or biomedical engineers with a background in genome editing, stem cell culture and differentiation, or islet transplantation. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in cell or developmental biology, biomedical engineering, molecular biology from within the last 5 years, or similar fields. Applicants should have a strong research background, as demonstrated by past publications, accomplishments, and references. The candidate must be a self-starter that is able to work well in a team environment. We are seeking a creative individual with great interpersonal skills and excellent communication, both written and verbal.
Opportunity: The PDF will be a member of a fun, diverse and interdisciplinary group. They will learn about cell therapies for diabetes. The successful candidate will be actively involved in projects that are intended for clinical translation. The University of British Columbia is located in Vancouver, which is world-renowned for its scenery and quality of living. UBC is a center of excellence for growing your career in T1D and stem cell and islet biology research, and you will have opportunities to collaborate with world-class leaders in the field through the Breakthrough T1D Centre of Excellence at UBC.
The expected pay for this position is $70,000 per year + benefits.
The initial appointment will be for one year commencing July 1, 2025, or a mutually agreed upon date with a possibility for extension, subject to satisfactory performance.
Application Process: Interested applicants should submit a CV and cover letter that details their experience and contact details for 3 references.
