Course Title and Code: CHM247H1S: Introductory Organic Chemistry II
Course Description: This course is recommended for students in the life and health science programs and is a continuation of CHM136H1 (Introductory Organic Chemistry I). The course commences with an outline of structure elucidation techniques in organic chemistry (spectroscopy) and proceeds to discuss the reactivity and properties of important functional groups. Emphasis is placed on synthetic and mechanistic principles that are applied to pharmaceutically and biologically important compounds whenever possible, providing students with a working knowledge of modern organic chemistry.
Estimated Enrolment: 500 students
Estimated TA Support: 1500 TA hours
Class Schedule: In-person: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.). *Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, this course may be delivered in-person, remotely/online, or by a combination of delivery methods as determined by the Faculty or Department at a later date.
Sessional Dates of Appointment: January 1, 2025, to April 30, 2025 (0.50 FCE)
Salary:
$9,457.90 for Sessional Lecturer I;
$9,930.79 for Sessional Lecturer I Long Term;
$10,121.77 for Sessional Lecturer II;
$10,326.62 for Sessional Lecturer II Long Term;
$10,362.76 for Sessional Lecturer III;
$10,570.02 for Sessional Lecturer III Long Term, inclusive of vacation pay, or possibly higher commensurate with experience.
Please note that should the rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Minimum Qualifications: A PhD in chemistry or a closely related field is required.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience coordinating laboratories in organic chemistry at the university level will be preferred.
Brief Description of Duties: The Department of Chemistry requires a sessional lecturer to coordinate in-person laboratories in CHM247H1 (Introductory Organic Chemistry II) during the 2025 Winter session. Duties include the responsibility of effectively coordinating labs with all of the attendant organizational issues of laboratory preparation and delivery, supervision of laboratory demonstrators, invigilating and marking of tests and exams, management and reporting of student laboratory marks, and holding office hours. *Please note* that this position may be split between two potential candidates.
This job is posted in accordance with the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.
