Your Opportunity:The Ophthalmic Technician I performs intermediate - to advanced-level eye function measurements and ancillary tests to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases. They are responsible for completing vision screenings in adults and children; obtaining the chief complaint and history of present illness; documenting ocular, medical, and family history; recording medication history and drug allergies; performing lensometry, auto and manual refraction, retinoscopy, ocular motility, and eye pressure measurements by tonopen & applanation tonometry; performing biometry via IOLmaster/Argos and immersion a-scan, corneal topography, specular microscopy, Humphrey and Octopus visual fields; assisting in preparation of patients for laser and minor procedures; and maintaining and stocking instruments and supplies, respectively. The individual may perform other tests and measurements as requested by the ophthalmologist and educate and instruct patients concerning eye care and medications. The incumbent works closely with ophthalmologists, residents, ophthalmic personnel, orthoptists, RNs and support staff to ensure that patients are triaged appropriately and seen in a timely fashion. They will participate in educational rounds, in-services and participate in quality initiatives. They will maintain good medical knowledge in ocular anatomy, pharmacology, diseases, and management, including current available treatments and clinical trials. They must also understand infection control in terms of proper sterilization and disinfection. Other duties may be assigned based on operational needs.Description: As an Ophthalmic Technician I, you will perform technical work involving the use of a variety of testing equipment to measure and evaluate visual field, retinal function and intraocular pressure in order to evaluate conditions affecting the eye. You will perform diagnostic Ophthalmic procedures under the direction of an Ophthalmologist. You will prepare patients for laser and minor procedures and instruct and educate the client/patient on procedure and equipment. Required Qualifications: Certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).Additional Required Qualifications: Current Heart & Stroke Foundation CPR (BCLS-HCP) required. Minimum three years of experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant/Technician in a healthcare setting, in a hospital eye clinic or an ophthalmologist’s office. Preference given to those with tertiary care experience. Attention to detail. Commitment to ongoing learning. Ability to collaborate within the expectations of an integrated team. Ability to demonstrate advanced problem-solving skills integrating critical thinking and good judgment. Ability to demonstrate communications skills that promote respect and a positive team environment. Experience with Netcare & Connect Care required. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with patients of varied visual and physical impairments where assistance may be required. Strong organizational skills and supports efficient workflows. Incumbent should have effective interpersonal and written communication skills. Strong computer skills including experience in Microsoft Outlook, & MS Teams.Preferred Qualifications: As required.
