The Tang Lab () develops explainable, autonomous, and multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) systems to advance biological discovery. Our research integrates machine learning with single-cell genomics, spatial omics, and systems biology, supported by strong collaborations across UBC and internationally.ProjectRecent advances in single-cell and spatial omics technologies have enabled unprecedented resolution in the study of cellular states, interactions, and tissue organization. However, extracting robust, interpretable, and biologically meaningful insights from these high-dimensional and multimodal datasets remains a major challenge. The successful candidate will develop next-generation computational and machine-learning frameworks for single-cell, spatial, and multimodal omics data. The project will focus on multimodal representation learning, uncertainty quantification, and interpretable and biologically plausible modeling, with the goal of building foundational AI tools that enable biological discovery in cancer, regenerative medicine, and neuroscience. The Postdoctoral Fellow will work closely with experimental collaborators to apply these methods to real biological datasets and to produce high-impact publications.CandidateWe are seeking candidates with a strong background in machine learning. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, or a closely related discipline, and have an strong record of research productivity. The ideal candidate will have experience in deep learning, generative models, or probabilistic modeling, and be proficient in Python and modern machine-learning frameworks (ideally PyTorch). Experience with single-cell transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, spatial omics, or multimodal data integration is highly desirable. Candidates with experience in cancer genomics or neuroscience, as well as those who have contributed to open-source software or large-scale data systems, are particularly encouraged to apply. Strong communication skills and the ability to independently drive research projects are essential.OpportunityThe Postdoctoral Fellow will join a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment at UBC, with access to high-performance computing resources and high-quality omics datasets. The position offers opportunities to work closely with experimental and computational researchers, to lead first-author publications, and to develop an independent research profile. Vancouver is consistently ranked among the world’s most livable cities, and UBC provides an outstanding environment for scientific research and career development.SalaryThe expected salary for this position is $55,000-$70,000 CAD plus benefits per year, commensurate with experience.AppointmentThe appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of extension subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.Application ProcessInterested applicants should submit a single PDF containing a curriculum vitae (including publication list), a brief research statement (1-2 pages), and contact information for 2-3 references. Applications should be submitted to the UBC Careers portal no later than the posting date. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence.
