Job SummaryThe Analyst will provide information extraction, reporting, synthesis and analysis to Dr. Amanda Slaunwhite, the Director at the Canadian Collaboration for Prison Health and Education (CCPHE) and the Scientific Director of Correctional Health Services at BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS). The Analyst will act as an internal consultant, providing data analysis and interpretation to Dr. Slaunwhite in collaboration with BCMHSUS leadership. The Analyst will conduct file reviews, code for relevant variables, and conduction descriptive analyses of Correctional Health Services data sets. This strategic information analysis is intended to inform care improvement efforts within CHS.Organizational StatusThe Analyst will report directly to the CCPHE Research Manager. The CCPHE Research Manager reports to Dr. Slaunwhite.The Analyst position and the CCPHE are located in the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH), which is within the Faculty of Medicine at the Vancouver campus of the University of British Columbia (UBC). The School is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at the University. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.Work PerformedLeads strategic information analysis initiatives (often as components of larger projects) in collaboration with Dr. Slaunwhite and the team at BCMHSUS. This work may include early intervention through monitoring hospital transfers due to drug related harms for CHS clients, analyzing the early impacts of the Sublocade contingency management pilot at CHS, and evaluation of the new Mental Health Unit. The Analyst will select data visualization choices, add value to data through the analysis and integration.Advises Dr. Slaunwhite on issues related to data quality and integrity and communicates these to the BCMHSUS team. Through a manual file review process, the Analyst will identify any gaps in complex clinical documentation within the EMR. The Analyst will use a triangulation process to validate data across systems.Applies knowledge of data classification methodologies and information management to present actionable knowledge the research team. The Analyst will provide descriptive analyses, and develop dashboards.Initiate discussions, prepares and presents reports and presentations and to a variety of clinical and administrative audiences.Liaises with staff at the BCMHSUS, in collaboration with Dr. Slaunwhite.Consequence of Error/JudgementThe work of the Analyst will be reviewed by the CCPHE Research Manager. Errors or incorrect decisions could compromise the quality of the research, compromise the collegial relationships with partners and/or participants, result in delays in completing projects, and potentially impact the credibility of the School and its investigators. Inability to exercise sound and sensitive judgement could diminish the investigator and/or School ability to attract the support of the scientific community and/or lead to poor public/private sector relationships and partnerships. The work of the Analyst must be completed at a high level of accuracy and efficiency.This position will be responsible for access, collection, use and disclosure of personal information in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996) and other UBC privacy and security policies. This position requires employees to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer. The quality and productivity of the research program, and the research team's national and international partnerships and communications will be affected. Confidentiality of highly personal health information collected from various health care sites in Canada must be protected.Supervision ReceivedThe Analyst will work under general direction of the CCPHE Research Manager, Dr. Slaunwhite, and the research team. It is imperative that the Analyst work collaboratively and with minimal supervision. The incumbent will act independently in performing defined duties and will alert the CCPHE Research Manager to any unusual situations, and will keep them advised of problems as they arise or are anticipated.Supervision GivenThe Analyst is not responsible for providing supervision.Minimum QualificationsUndergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusionPreferred QualificationsDemonstrated knowledge of Strategic Information support concepts and methodologies, and statistical analysis.Excellent analytical skills and demonstrated ability to locate, extract, synthesize and present information.Have the ability to work independently and take self-initiative.Understanding of the complex roles and relationships between local, provincial, and federal funders and service providers in the health and criminal justice systems. Knowledge of ethical considerations in carrying out research, particularly in mentally disordered individuals in conflict with the law.Demonstrated knowledge of statistical analysis and research methodologies. Competency in computer database management, statistical analysis programs and other software programs (e.g., Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint).Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing (business and technical).The ability to participate in and facilitate multidisciplinary groups in a collaborative environment with multiple interests.The ability to work effectively with others interdependently as part of a team and understanding the perspectives of other disciplines.
