Main Purpose & FunctionThe Program Assistant II works under the direction of a supervisor, primarily the Recreation Programmer or Community Youth Worker, in assisting in the development, implementation, administration and coordination of programs, program area or events.Specific Duties & ResponsibilitiesThis position requires excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, and a strong appreciation for recreation and social development. This position performs routine recreational work including supervision of recreational programs and opening and lockup of the facility. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and as a team member. The scope of this work may include (but is not limited to): assisting in carrying out special events, monitoring the safety and behaviour of the participants in facility programs or activities such as youth activity nights and special events, volunteer recruitment, opening, setting-up or closing a facility, and some moderate clerical responsibilities and office break coverage. This position is responsible for ensuring participants are safe while in our programs. Hours of work will vary and may include evening and/or weekend shifts.QualificationsEducation and Experience:Completion of Grade 12 and some related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experienceCompletion of or registration in an approved diploma program in Recreation, Youth and Child Care or a related discipline is preferredA minimum of six months experience in Recreation with children and youth or a relevant field is preferredA Class 4 driver's license is considered an assetStandard or Emergency First Aid with CPR-C required *Note: All applicants must attach their First Aid Certificate(s) to their application. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Working knowledge of the behaviour, needs, and interests typical of participants of all agesWorking knowledge of the practices, procedures and equipment used in recreational programs and activitiesWorking knowledge of the safety practices, policies, regulations and rules applicable to the work performedSome knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadershipSome knowledge of office practices and proceduresAbility to effectively monitor activities and behaviour of participantsAbility to assist in the planning and carrying out of special events or programsAbility to lead groups and provide basic skills instruction in various activitiesAbility to collect fees, issue receipts, and balance cashAbility to provide first aid as requiredAbility to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other facility staffAbility to ensure the care, welfare, safety and security of community centre patrons is prioritised A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.
