The successful candidate will be a creative thinker who brings original ideas and innovative treatments to all platforms and has demonstrated skills in producing, shooting, and editing content at a high level. You have strong ties to, and a deep understanding of, underrepresented communities and equity-deserving groups in British Columbia. You have advanced technical skills and a solid understanding of CBC’s Journalism Standards and Practices.Under the general direction of News leadership and our assignment desk, you will operate independently, or as part of the content teams to research, gather, package, and distribute or deliver media for CBC’s platforms including CBC British Columbia’s FAST Channel, CBC GEM, Social Media, our News Website, Radio, and conventional Television. You have a strong familiarity with all social media platforms and a keen aptitude for visual storytelling that resonates with our target audience aged 30-49. You will often work independently and without direct supervision. You care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions, and experiences. You live and promote the values of diversity, inclusion, and respectful work culture.Under the department of the CBC News, work must adhere to CBC’s journalistic and program policies, standards and practices but there is latitude for initiative, independent judgment and creativity. Occasionally, there may be a requirement to coordinate the work of others, and assist and support others to create content for the various platforms.  Main responsibilities: Conceives, pitches, develops and edits story ideas and concepts. Helps to determine or influence the editorial direction of a story. Takes direction from, and works collaboratively with, other content creators as required.Operates a camera during a live broadcast. Working in collaboration with editorial staff to bring events that are important to British Columbians to them in real time.Develops visual story content including researching, writing, interviewing, shooting, generating, and/or editing of written and visual material. Determines the visual style, pace, tempo, and format of the story item relative to each platform it will be published on including video, soundscapes, photo galleries, and other content items while ensuring that perspectives from diverse and underrepresented communities are considered.Independently or under the supervision of an editorial leader, creatively edits visual content using non-linear editing software with a high degree of craft skill while meeting CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.Contributes to the development of new production methods using contemporary visual storytelling trends, practices, tools and techniques, to continually improve CBC’s content and best practices.Performs location surveys and identifies special requirements such as audio, lighting, camera angles, and equipment, including production limitations.Prepares, aligns, sets up, and operates small format, cinema, and traditional broadcast cameras and ancillary equipment, ensuring optimal visual, audio, and technical quality under prevailing conditions for multiple platforms and deadlines.Ingests, transcodes, and/or processes images to improve overall quality or for specific creative effect within JSP guidelines.Provides technical guidance, expertise, and support, focused on content production techniques and workflows.Occasionally travels out of town, sometimes on short notice, to cover breaking news and planned assignments.Your profile: A combination of education and experience equivalent to a degree or certificate in Television Production, Journalism or a related field and 5 years of practical industry experience.Strong sense of creativity, initiative, and a high degree of responsibility for the accuracy and quality of work throughout the complete production cycle.Proven record of highly creative, innovative visual storytelling.Superior level of technical knowledge with a variety of cameras, broadcast equipment and video, audio and photo editing platforms.Understanding of visual gathering, visual production, and post-production methods with a focus on storytelling. Experience reflecting diverse and contemporary communities in visual storytelling.Strong communication, interpersonal, and client service skills are required.Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining a professional attitude.Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to pursue the acquisition of story elements with a minimum of supervision.Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.Ability and willingness to work overtime and various shifts, including overnights, weekdays and weekends as required. Able to travel on short notice for deployments provincially nationally or internationally that may last up to a week. Transport Canada RPAS Advanced Pilot Certification is an asset Professional photography skills are an assetSkills and experience with creating motion graphics are an assetPossession of a valid driver's license as well as a good driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.Please include a link to your online demo reel in your application.
