Your Opportunity:The Orthoptist performs advanced level eye function measurements and ancillary tests to assist Ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases. As an important member of the ophthalmic team working with Pediatric and Adult Strabismus Ophthalmologists, Neuro-Ophthalmologist, and other staff Ophthalmologists, patients may be referred to the Orthoptist for sensorimotor evaluation and non-surgical management of binocular single vision disorders. In clinic, they are responsible for orthoptic assessments; obtaining the chief complaint and history of present illness; documenting ocular, medical and family history; recording medication history and drug allergies; performing lensometry, auto and manual refraction, Hess tests, color vision tests, applanation tonometry; and maintaining and stocking instruments and supplies. Orthoptists have specialized knowledge in vision science and their practice includes the assessment, evaluation and identification of disorders of binocular vision, ocular motility, and related disorders of vision for the purpose of enhancing or restoring visual function. They are able to carefully examine the eye using a slit lamp and apply topical eye drops to anesthetize, dilate or medicate the eyes. They may perform other tests and measurements as requested by the Ophthalmologist, educate, and instruct patients concerning eye care and medications. They will participate in research studies, educational rounds and in-services and maintain good medical knowledge.Description: As an Orthoptist, you will perform advanced-level eye function measurements and ancillary tests to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases. Required Qualifications: Completion of an orthoptic course from an accredited institution. Active membership with the Canadian Orthoptic Council (COC).Additional Required Qualifications: Minimum of three years’ experience as an Orthoptist in a healthcare setting, in a hospital eye clinic or an Ophthalmologist’s office. Current CPR certification is required. Fluent in medical terminology and pharmacology (especially in ophthalmic diseases & conditions). Self-directed, relates well to health team professionals, patients and their families. Shows good judgement, excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills. Able to set priorities and make decisions that are appropriate to the position. Competent in use of all orthoptist equipment: autorefractor, lensometer, phoropter, synoptophore, trial frames & lenses, retinoscope visual field perimeters, Hess screen, slit lamp, tonometer, OCTs, and colour vision. Current member of the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).Preferred Qualifications: Additional training and certification as an Ophthalmic Medical Technician/Technologist. Ability to perform photography and angiography.
