**Job Summary**

Nation’s Vision is a social entrepreneurial eyecare team which provides portable on-site services for local marginalized populations. Our team comprises of opticians, technicians, optometrists, and ophthalmologists. We specialize in high quality portable exams for those who experience significant barriers in accessing healthcare services. A large contingent of our patient profile are low-income schoolchildren, for which we provide eyecare services directly in select schools, in partnership with various school boards.

We are seeking a dynamic, independent and highly motivated orthoptist to work with our team and ophthalmologist in the provision of high quality eyecare services to our local priority populations.

As the Orthoptist, you will strive to achieve the highest level of professional conduct in keeping with the principle of family-centered care, fully respecting the child and family, and cognizant of ethnic and cultural differences. The duties expected of you will include assessment, diagnosis and treatment when indicated by the ophthalmologists.

As an Orthoptist, you will perform advanced-level eye function measurements and ancillary tests to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases. You may participate in research studies, educational rounds and in-services, and maintain good medical knowledge of ocular anatomy, pharmacology, diseases, and management, including current available treatments and clinical trials.

**Roles and Responsibilities**
- Safely transporting all equipment to clinics.
- Safely setting up and taking down equipment at each assigned clinic
- Maintaining an organized tally of equipment/inventory and ensuring it remains in good repair.
- Notifying management of any equipment issues.
- Assisting in patient and clinic scheduling
- Assisting in public relations
- Assisting in marketing and research
- Serving as the primary customer service representative
- Accurately performing patient screening/testing (optometric assistant duties):

- History, Visual Acuity, Pupil Assessment, Goldmann Applanation, Colour Vision, Instilling drops, etc.
- Accurately performing diagnostic testing.
- Fundus Assessment, Visual Field, etc.
- Explaining the purpose of each test and demonstrating proactive assessment;
- Refractions, Perimetry, Retinoscopy, Tonometry, ultrasonography, and perimetry.
- Communicating with patients regarding follow-up care, pre and post-operative care, testing, possible symptoms, changes in appointment times etc;
- Efficiently and accurately documenting all pertinent information in patient records (EMR);
- Maintaining, calibrating and cleaning all equipment used throughout the day;
- Reviewing selection of spectacles with patients
- Reviewing spectacle prescriptions
- Returning phone calls to patients and other healthcare professionals in a timely manner;
- Complete billing when required.
- Assisting doctors in their duties.
- Other duties as assigned

**Required Education and Qualifications**
- High School Diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Completion of an orthoptic course from an accredited institution. Active membership with the Canadian Orthoptic Council (COC).A valid Alberta driver’s license is required
- 2+ years of previous experience as an orthoptist
- Completion of your AAO/COA is an asset;
- 3+ years’ experience in the optometry field is an asset
- Administrative experience an asset
- Proficiency in written and spoken English, other languages an asset
- Computer skills are required particularly experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Sharepoint, and more.
- Experience with Revolution EHR and dental software is also an asset.
- Experience working with priority populations and/or public health an asset
- Grant writing and research experience is an asset

- Pediatric experience is a strong asset
- Ability to work independently

- Strong verbal and written communication skills;

- Fluency in multiple languages is a key asset.
