Job Posting Director Tripping and Out Trips-Tanamakoon Associate Director of Canoe Tripping and Out Trips Reports To: Ownership/Senior Camp Director Supervises: Canoe Tripping Staff, Assistant Trip Leaders (AT) Position Summary The Director of Canoe Tripping is responsible for the planning, coordination, and safe execution of all out tripping programs at Tanamakoon- Canoe trips, Backpacking Trips, Hiking Trips, Day Trips and Cookouts. This includes pre-season preparation, staff training, route planning, risk management, and ensuring that each trip provides campers with a positive, safe, and educational wilderness experience. Key Responsibilities Program Leadership Plan, organize, and oversee all camp canoe trips (day trips and multi-day excursions). Ensure trips support camp values of leadership, teamwork, outdoor education, and respect for the environment. Plan, implement, and oversee all leadership development programs pertaining to Canoe trips for LIT and AC’s and AT’s Develop and deliver training sessions on leadership, communication, teamwork, and camp values. Safety & Risk Management Maintain and implement camp’s canoe tripping policies and procedures. Ensure all trips follow safety protocols, including equipment checks, weather monitoring, and emergency response procedures. Conduct risk assessments for routes and environmental conditions, such as wildfires, wildfire smoke and severe weather monitoring. Staff Supervision & Training Train, and supervise trip leaders and AT (Assistant Trippers). Provide ongoing feedback, mentorship, and evaluation to canoe tripping staff. Lead pre-season and in-season training in paddling, navigation, first aid, camping skills, and emergency procedures. Camper & Staff Mentorship and Support Provide regular feedback and end-of-session evaluations to Canoe Trippers, AT’s and AC’s who have gone on a canoe trip Support counselling staff in mentoring leadership participants in their roles. Logistics & Administration Manage canoe trip equipment, ensuring all gear is maintained, inventoried, and safe for use. Assigns all campers and counseling staff to canoe trips. Oversees any changes that have to be made Coordinate cookouts- locations, menus and equipment Coordinate and plan pizza oven lunch cookouts Work with our healthcare team and trip food packer to ensure all dietary restrictions are taken care of. Organizes supplies, permits, and transportation for all trips. Ensures trip charges are added on to tuck bill Maintain trip reports, incident documentation, and parent communication as needed. Photographs all trips so families receive a photo. Provides campers with a route summary and photo to go home with them when they leave camp. Camper Experience Ensure canoe tripping experiences are inclusive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate. Foster camper confidence, teamwork, and appreciation for the outdoors. Support staff in creating a positive and memorable wilderness experience. Help Counselling staff plan for overnights- activities and ideas to keep campers engaged and enjoying their time on trip. Qualifications Canoe tripping experience (leading multi-day trips in wilderness settings). Strong leadership and staff management skills. Current certifications in: CPR & Standard First Aid Ontario Driver’s License Pleasure Craft Operator Course Knowledge of risk management in outdoor settings. Ability to plan and execute logistics for extended canoe trips. Strong organizational and communication skills. Personal Qualities Enthusiastic, adaptable, and calm under pressure. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. Passion for working with children and youth in an outdoor education environment. Commitment to environmental stewardship and Leave No Trace principles.
