Northern College is seeking a General Maintenance Worker/Grounds Keeper in our Plant and Property department. The successful candidate will be able to work as part of a team and independently. They must have carpentry, plumbing and welding skills as well as troubleshooting skills. Reporting to the Manager, Plant and Property, the successful candidate will perform semi-skilled work in tasks usually associated with one or more of the skilled trades while ensuring that repairs/maintenance, and services are completed in a timely manner to ensure safety of staff and students. What you will be doing: Perform general grounds keeping duties such as snow removal, lawn mowing, gardening, tree trimming, operating plant equipment including tractors, walk-behind equipment, and vehicles; Perform repairs and routine preventative maintenance to grounds equipment such as lawnmowers, tractors, trimmers, chainsaw, sanders, sweepers, and snow removal equipment; Maintain/repair damaged or deteriorated interior and exterior building finishes through demand work orders or planned preventative maintenance; Undertake repairs to drywall, masonry and glass (i.e. caulking and patching) some demolition and construction of drywall partitions as required. Performs painting (i.e. washrooms, corridors, classes, offices etc.) tasks as required; Perform minor plumbing maintenance such as install, maintain and repair plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, facets, drinking fountains etc..; clear obstructions from water; Pick up and deliver materials and supplies and move equipment and furniture; Monthly inspection of fire extinguishers, stand pipe systems, fire hydrants, emergency telephones, first aid kits and eye wash stations; and Contact contractors and suppliers to schedule repairs and maintenance visits as needed. Ensures Health and Safety Policies and Procedures are followed. Monitors outcome of work performed. A detailed job description is available from the Human Resource Services department. What you will need to be considered: 1-year certificate in a related field: Minimum of two (2) years experience with the ability to operate grounds equipment (e.g. riding lawnmower, tractor, snowblower) and small hand tools. Grounds and large building maintenance experience, mobile equipment and small engine repair, air compression and hydraulics experience; Class G driver’s license; and WHMIS and First Aid/CPR/AED.
