Job Summary

Under the direction of the Principal, Education Assistants (EAs) play a vital role in supporting students with diverse learning needs. Working collaboratively with teachers, resource staff, and other professionals, EAs contribute to the delivery of inclusive and effective education. They assist in fostering a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment that encourages student success and well-being. EAs are essential members of the school community, dedicated to fostering student achievement and well-being. They exemplify professionalism, collaboration, and adaptability while supporting an inclusive and culturally responsive educational environment.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Student Support
    • Assist in implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Individual Care Plans, and other individualized academic and developmental programs.
    • Provide one-on-one or small group support to students, helping them achieve their academic, social, and emotional goals.
    • Support students with behavioral, physical, and medical needs, adapting strategies as required.
  • Classroom Collaboration
    • Work closely with classroom teachers to deliver instructional support tailored to the needs of students.
    • Collaborate with the Resource Teacher to ensure that learning plans align with individual goals and educational standards.
    • Contribute to the overall classroom environment by encouraging positive behaviors, engagement, and participation.
  • Behavior and Social Development
    • Implement behavior intervention strategies and conflict resolution techniques to support students in managing challenges.
    • Build strong rapport with students to encourage trust, motivation, and positive interactions.
  • Medical and Physical Support
    • Administer authorized medications and assist with physiotherapy as directed.
    • Provide basic first aid and monitor students’ safety in all activities.
    • Assist with physical needs, including mobility support, as required.
  • Data and Record Management
    • Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and behavior.
    • Collect and monitor data to assess the effectiveness of interventions and learning plans.
  • Team Collaboration
    • Support teachers and administrators to ensure seamless delivery of educational and care programs.
    • Participate in team meetings, sharing insights and observations to support the development of comprehensive strategies for student success.
    • Communicate effectively with teachers, administrators, parents, and external service providers.
  • Professional Development
    • Engage in ongoing professional learning to stay informed of best practices in education, special needs support, and trauma-informed care.
  • Other Duties
    • Support school-wide activities and events as needed.
    • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Principal or supervising staff.
Qualifications

  • Education: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, along with a Special Education Teaching Assistant certificate or equivalent training in child and youth care, counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience: Preferably two years of experience working with children and youth in an educational setting, or a combination of relevant education and experience supporting children at-risk or those with developmental delays and special needs.
  • Preferred Credentials: Candidates with a Special Education Teaching Assistant certificate will be given preference.
  • Criminal Record Check: Must successfully pass a Criminal Record Check for working with vulnerable populations.
  • First Aid Certification: A valid Level 1 First Aid Certificate is considered an asset.
  • Professional Development: Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and complete job-related training, including First Aid and CPR certification.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Student Support Expertise: Demonstrated ability to work effectively with children experiencing behavioral, social, emotional, and mental health challenges, including psychiatric concerns.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to compile accurate records, prepare detailed reports, and effectively communicate with educational staff, social workers, service providers, and other partners.
  • Cultural Awareness: Experience working in a First Nations community is an asset, along with a broad understanding of family and social issues in diverse cultural contexts.
  • Independence and Initiative: Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating proactive decision-making, self-starting capabilities, and the ability to design and implement new models or programs as needed.
  • Collaboration: Skilled in working within a multidisciplinary team, taking direction from teaching staff and administrators while contributing meaningfully to shared goals.
  • Specialized Training: Experience and training in de-escalation techniques, trauma-informed practices, and other supportive interventions.
  • Physical Readiness: Physically capable of participating in and supporting school activities such as swimming, hiking, canoeing, and biking.
  • Behavioral Support Expertise: Experience with supporting individuals with FASD, OCD, autism spectrum disorders, aggressive behaviors, and physically intrusive tendencies. Strong ability to set boundaries and provide structured support to meet individual needs.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to engage in physical activity, including standing for extended periods.
  • Active participation in outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, or school events.
  • Manual dexterity needed to operate computers and other classroom tools.

Mental Focus

  • Work may involve supporting students who occasionally display challenging or demanding behavior.
  • Requires patience, dedication to teaching, and the ability to engage in conflict resolution or crisis management when necessary.
  • Must balance multiple tasks and projects, often managing frequent interruptions to address the needs of students and the organization.

Environmental Conditions

  • Regular interaction with students, parents, colleagues, school management, and community members.
  • Noise levels may increase during school activities, events, or outings.

Education Assistants must adapt to dynamic and sometimes high-pressure environments while maintaining a positive, professional, and solution-oriented approach.
