POSITION PROFILE - SENIOR ACCOUNTANT

Westerkirk Capital Inc. (‘WCI’), a private investment company based in Victoria, BC is seeking a Senior Accountant. The organization is a single-family office managing assets via internal direct and third-party/external managers across a variety of portfolios and asset classes including fixed income, public equity, private equity, hedge funds, infrastructure, and real estate.


The Senior Accountant, plays a key role within the finance department. The ideal candidate must be able to thrive in a dynamic environment with changing priorities and is a self-starter who takes initiative. Further, they will be accredited and an experienced team player who posses’ strong analytical skills with a solid foundation of investment related accounting experience. The salary range for this role is $80k - $105k, however actual salary may fall outside of this range depending on various factors, including but not limited to, experience and expertise.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Maintain accounting records for investment activities by recording financial transactions and reconciling accounts to ensure accurate reporting of assets under management.
  • Assist in preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reporting packages including quarterly financial statements and variance analysis.
  • Review, record and reconcile transactions, income allocation and fee calculations prepared by the third-party fund administrators.
  • Prepare and review account reconciliations, departmental allocations, intercompany recharges and analysis of financial results.
  • Compile year-end working papers for external reporting and corporate tax compliance.
  • Analyze complex accounting issues by researching, interpreting and prepare accounting policy memos supporting the accounting treatment under ASPE.
  • Assist in preparation of the annual budget and cash forecasts by preparing supporting schedules and reviewing assumptions for accuracy.
  • Supporting process improvements and system automation by recommending and implementing changes.
  • Help coordinate the year-end field work of external auditors to ensure timely completion of audit and review engagements.
  • Mentor junior finance team members.
  • Provide ongoing support for any additional financial reporting requirements, ad hoc tasks or projects as required.


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years in an intermediate accounting role.
  • CPA designation or working towards designation is preferred, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of ASPE.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and fit with company values and culture.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, including financial reporting under ASPE as well as accounting for a variety of investment types (private equity, fixed income, real estate, etc.).
  • Self-motivated, results-driven professional with the ability to work in a fast- paced environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to articulate key themes and messages both with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Advanced working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of products; specifically, Excel and Word.
  • Experience with Microsoft NAV and Yardi ERP is considered an asset.
  • Experience with personal and corporate tax preferred.
