Assistant Head Nurse

This position is classified as an Assistant Head Nurse and the working title will be Nurse Clinician (NC). The Nurse Clinician duties will differentiate from the current AHN duties as outlined in this position summary. Reporting to the Manager of the ICU, the NC is responsible and accountable for front-line clinical and operational support, acting in a consultative capacity as a coach, a mentor, and a resource while leading a team of multidisciplinary health care providers. The ICU NC will also need to be able to provide clinical care (e.g., taking patient assignment, assisting with procedures, supporting staff with CRRT) in the ICU as needed. The NC works to sustain a healthy, safe, and efficient work environment by actively engaging in and guiding program planning including human resource optimization (e.g., staff mix/models of care), quality improvement structures, initiatives and committees (e.g., RLS, Code Blue Review Committee, PIN initiatives), and supply/equipment management. (e.g. Oracle).

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications:
Current CRNA practice permit. Minimum 5 years of experience in critical care nursing. Minimum 3 years of experience as a Charge nurse. BLS-C (Basic Rescuer) certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or equivalent. Orientation Program for Adult Critical Care in Alberta (OPACCA) or equivalent training. Proven leadership and communication skills, including demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching and teaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others. Ability to positively influence an environment of workflow improvement, patient safety, best practice, and continuous quality improvement. Ability to foster partnerships and strong relationships with internal AHS programs and services, and external agencies. Excellent organizational, prioritization, and change management skills. Demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development. Ability to maintain effective and respectful working relationships. Ability to follow and adhere to AHS policies, procedures, goals and objectives. Progressive leadership experience in a critical care environment with demonstrated ability coaching for performance, mentorship and conflict management, and management of diverse human and material resources in a changing and complex environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Critical Care certification or equivalent. Previous managerial or supervisory experience. Expertise working with electronic health information systems (e.g., Connect Care, ANP). Training/experience in reviewing/addressing safety reports via the Regional Learning System & MySafetyNet. Training/experience in inventory and equipment management, and the Oracle system. Training/experience in payroll and time management via ESP.
