The projected start date is January 6, 2025 with an end date of December 31, 2028 (or depending on the candidate's availability or needs). It is expected that the student will work 20 hours per week with the possibility of part-time extension. Salary ranges from $28.99 to $37.53 per hour (varies as per the level of education and experience).

Duties
  • Collection, logging, transporting and processing of biological samples;
  • Design of novel molecular biology assays targeting bacterial pathogens and antibiotic resistance;
  • Molecular and microbiology duties including DNA extraction, media preparation, and bacterial culture;
  • Calibration of laboratory equipment;
  • Data entry and initial analysis; record maintenance.
Work environment

We are looking to hire a PhD student from the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to work on a project about selective therapy in Canadian dairy herds. The project is in collaboration with the University of Calgary.

Essential qualifications

Education: Enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine with specialization in Epidemiology of Infectious Disease and Antimicrobial Resistance.

Experience

Experience with molecular biology techniques, collecting, logging, transporting, and processing biological samples.

Knowledge

Knowledge of laboratory procedures and techniques related to microbiology and antibiotic resistance.

Competencies

Planning and Organizing; Initiative; Teamwork; Interactive communication.

Abilities

Ability to operate and maintain laboratory and field equipment; perform analyses on biological materials.

Operational Requirements

Ability and willingness to work overtime including evenings and weekends.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance is required.
