PURPOSE:

The Director of Software Development will oversee the strategic direction, development, and implementation of software & analytics solutions within the company. The Director of Software Development will lead the software development team, managing projects, ensuring high-quality deliverables, and aligning software development activities with the organization's strategic goals.

JOB OVERVIEW:

Leadership and Management

  • Provides leadership and direction to the software development team, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Mentors and develops team members, promoting professional growth and ensuring the team possesses the necessary skills and knowledge.

Strategy and Planning

  • Develops and implements the software development strategy in alignment with the company’s overall objectives.
  • Is a system thinker who is able to define a cohesive technology roadmap across product lines/product families for long-term planning.
  • Collaborates with senior management to define product roadmaps and project priorities.

Project Management

  • Oversees the planning, execution, and delivery of software projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Implements best practices for project management, including Agile methodologies.
  • Works closely with product managers to define, estimate and deliver releases, milestones and roadmaps including providing release burndowns.
  • Manages software support, updates and end of life for software offerings.

Technical Oversight

  • Provides technical guidance and support to the development team, ensuring the adoption of modern technologies and methodologies.
  • Ensures the architecture and design of software solutions are robust, scalable, and secure.

Quality Assurance

  • Establishes and enforces quality standards and processes to ensure the delivery of high-quality software products.
  • Collaborates with QA teams to implement comprehensive testing strategies.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Acts as the primary liaison between the software development team and other departments, ensuring clear communication and alignment of goals.
  • Engages with clients and stakeholders to understand their needs and translate them into actionable software solutions.

Business Mindset

  • Ability to optimize staffing to deliver on roadmap while optimizing budget.
  • Contributes insights with senior leadership to ensure feasibility and success of business strategy.
  • Tracks and manages cost to serve for offerings.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or related education is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in software development is required.
  • Five years of experience in a leadership role is required.

EXPERIENCE

  • Proven track record of managing and delivering complex software projects.
  • Has managed distributed teams at scale.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and best practices.
  • Experience with Agile and DevOps methodologies.
  • Exceptional leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to articulate a cost, benefit, reliability, and risk analysis of alternatives.
  • Experience with on-premise and SaaS offerings and how to transition to the cloud.
  • Strong knowledge & experience building data platforms (ingest, analytics, data science, data management, data quality, dev ops) including industry standards, best practices and the ability to evaluate trade-offs in technical choices.
  • Strong acumen of hardware & software development lifecycle.
  • Skilled with executing a continuous delivery methodology of build, test, iterate for hardware, software & service solutions.
  • Ability to evaluate software, technologies and architectures.
  • Proven leadership with a strong commitment to advocating for key initiatives, motivating teams, and driving continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively identify issues, drive cross-functional collaboration, and resolve challenges through critical thinking, best practices, and innovative problem-solving.
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring colleagues, effectively communicating complex information, and building consensus among stakeholders.
  • Strong persuasive skills, with the capacity to communicate data-driven reasoning, influence outcomes, and navigate stakeholder dynamics.
  • Expertise in assessing risks, managing uncertainty, and making confident decisions based on data analysis, even in ambiguous situations.
  • Resilience in pursuing goals, maintaining positivity, and exploring alternative solutions despite setbacks.
