Job Title: Outdoor Educator

We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified Outdoor Educator to join our team at the University of British Columbia's Malcolm Knapp Research Forest. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and facilitating outdoor programs, supporting the development of the Wild & Immersive program, and working closely with the Wild & Immersive Coordinator and Field Education Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement outdoor education programs for children aged 5-12, focusing on environmental education and community engagement.
  • Collaborate with the Wild & Immersive team to design and deliver program content, ensuring alignment with the program's goals and objectives.
  • Provide training and support to junior staff members, promoting a culture of excellence and teamwork.
  • Conduct research and analysis to inform program development and improvement, leveraging knowledge of British Columbia's ecology and childhood development.
  • Manage program logistics, including coordination of events, supplies, and equipment, ensuring a safe and effective learning environment.
  • Exercise critical decision-making skills to troubleshoot program challenges and difficulties in real-time, prioritizing the safety and well-being of participants.
Requirements:
  • Completion of a relevant technical program or university degree in a relevant discipline, with a minimum of three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven experience working with children, particularly in outdoor education settings, with a focus on environmental education and community engagement.
  • Strong understanding of British Columbia's ecology, childhood development, and outdoor education principles.
  • Excellent communication and critical decision-making skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Current Remote First Aid Certificate, Class 5 Driver's License with a clean driver's abstract, and a current Criminal Record Check.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Past engagement in youth programming and community education, with a focus on outdoor education and environmental conservation.
  • Experience working with diverse groups, including children with neurodivergences, and a commitment to creating inclusive and accessible programs.
  • Knowledge of outdoor skills certifications and a willingness to obtain relevant certifications.
