Job Description

A leading Canadian Commercial Real Estate investment company seeks an Environmental Sustainability Director with expertise in environmental risk management to support the Head of Sustainability. This role will oversee environmental compliance across the national portfolio of sites under development and construction, collaborating closely with Investments, Construction & Development teams.

The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, experience in developing Environmental Management Systems, and knowledge of environmental statutes and regulations. They must be able to communicate effectively with senior leadership and facilitate discussions among multiple parties.

This role involves:

  • Leading the environmental risk management division, developing policies and procedures
  • Collaborating with internal departments to address environmental risk and compliance issues
  • Partnering with external teams, consultants, and third-party service providers to manage construction sites, focusing on brownfield projects
  • Reviewing and updating environmental reporting and management systems to ensure compliance and mitigate risks
  • Administering an environmental compliance database, identifying and reporting material risks and opportunities through regular audits
  • Enhancing environmental compliance, cost management, and regulatory relationships to ensure program effectiveness
  • Advising internal departments and collaborating with third-party consultants on environmental remediation activities
  • Investigating nonconformities and implementing corrective and preventive actions for existing properties and development projects

Requirements

To succeed in this role, you must possess:

  • At least 8 years of experience in sustainability and/or ESG, with a focus on environmental risk management
  • A university education in Environmental Sciences or a relevant Professional Designation
  • Experience in developing and implementing Environmental Management Systems
  • Knowledge of environmental statutes and regulations
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Demonstrated experience in managing projects, teams, and timelines
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Salary Range

$120,000-$145,000 per annum, plus short- and long-term bonuses, benefits, RRSP matching, and pension contributions.
