Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team at William Osler Health System. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the laboratory team by performing a variety of tasks, including specimen reception, processing, and testing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receives and processes specimens from various sources, including pneumatic tube systems, couriers, and hospital staff.
  • Registers patient information and accesses specimens as needed, ensuring accurate and timely processing.
  • Uses positive patient identification to ensure all requisitions, specimens, and sample aliquots are traceable.
  • Applies specimen acceptance and rejection criteria according to established laboratory policies.
  • Enters add-on test requests and retrieves specimens for further testing as required.
  • Provides excellent customer service, answering phone inquiries and resolving issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Faxes reports according to protocol and prepares and ships samples to referral laboratories.
  • Properly stores and discards specimens in accordance with retention policies and biohazard waste protocols.
  • Prepares reagents, stains, and other materials according to procedures.
  • Familiar with COVID-19 sample preparation, including extraction, and able to run, maintain, and troubleshoot COVID-19 specific equipment.
  • Performs quality control testing as required and operates and maintains laboratory equipment, including automated analyzers.
  • Reviews outstanding specimen reports, investigates outliers, and transcribes results from worksheets/reports into the computer for final verification.
  • Performs temperature monitoring of refrigerators, freezers, and incubators and maintains knowledge of current policies and procedures.
  • Understands and actively participates in maintaining the laboratory quality management system and detects, reports, corrects, and prevents unexpected occurrences.
  • Completes occurrence reports, applies relevant markers, and canned text comments.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with Osler policy and performs general laboratory housekeeping, disinfects benches and equipment, and biohazard waste containment, packaging, and storage.
  • Monitors and maintains inventory and participates in continuing education activities.
Requirements
  • Successful completion of an Ontario secondary school diploma.
  • Graduate of an accredited medical laboratory assistant/technician program.
  • Current certification and registration with OSMT, CSMLS, and/or CMLTO voluntary roster.
  • Minimum two years of experience in microbiology preferred.
  • Recent experience working and/or clinical placement in a hospital laboratory receiving area required.
  • Knowledge of Meditech, Paradigm, and Microsoft Office programs would be an asset.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to be a team player.
  • Strong multi-tasking and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and maintain a high level of productivity, competence, and professionalism.

  • Excellent attendance, punctuality, and work record.
  • Required to travel between and work at all Osler sites.
