Automation Systems Engineer

As a Building Automation Technologist at BCIT, you will play a crucial part in our mission to create a sustainable and efficient campus environment. This role is responsible for monitoring and improving Building Automation System operations, identifying energy-efficient opportunities within various HVAC and lighting systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure that heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) and other systems under Building Management System (BMS) automated control are operated meeting established energy management guidelines and in accordance with defined control strategies, applicable bylaws, regulations, codes and standards, and best practices.
- Develop and maintain trend logs for building automation systems to monitor energy usage, environmental conditions, and equipment performance. Analyze historical data to identify trends, troubleshoot issues, program and optimize system efficiency. Provide actionable insights to enhance energy performance across campus.
- Analyze any issues related to temperature, humidity, static pressure, air flow, noise, air quality within the building automation system and recommend solutions or collaborate with technicians for implementation.
- Make adjustments to system control logic, update graphical user interfaces, and troubleshoot various building automation networks and protocols to ensure optimal system performance and integration.
- Communicate with individuals from a variety of departments within BCIT, and external contractors brought in to work on systems, including working with difficult or upset clients, describing problems and explaining the interrelation of complex systems.
- Coordinate and monitor the work of contractors to ensure adherence to established standards.
- Commission equipment by testing the system to verify that devices respond appropriately to the specified parameters and instruction set.
- Stay current on new technology and regulatory requirements including changes to standards and codes related to the profession.
Requirements
- Requires the equivalent of completion of specialized training programs of up to two years' duration. For example, a Diploma of Technology/Building Controls & Energy Management or completion of a two-year full-time program from a community college.
- Requires two years' general experience plus up to four years' practical current experience on building automation systems and/or creating energy-efficient solutions in a dynamic campus environment, preferably in an institutional or commercial setting.
- Strong technical skills in building controls systems and energy management. Proficient in building automation software (e.g., entelliWeb, RCWebView, Niagara, Johnson Controls, etc.). Experience with HVAC, lighting control systems, and energy monitoring software.
