Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Registered Nurse to join our team at BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services. As a Registered Nurse, you will provide direct care to patients in our Minimum and Medium Security Units, utilizing your expertise in psychiatric nursing to promote the physical and psychological well-being of our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct Care Provision: Provide direct care to patients in accordance with their individual care plans, including administering medication, performing protocols and interventions, and implementing behavior management strategies.
  • Healthcare Information Management: Collect and document patient healthcare information, maintaining accurate and complete records of nursing observations, interventions, and evaluations.
  • Care Planning and Coordination: Participate in interdisciplinary assessment and screening processes, develop and implement care plans, and evaluate outcomes to ensure the best possible care for our patients.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Consult with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless care coordination and effective communication with patients and families.
  • Patient Education and Support: Teach and provide guidance to patients on psychosocial, life, and personal care skills, promoting independence and self-advocacy.
  • Environmental Safety and Security: Maintain a safe environment for patients, families, and staff, adhering to established emergency procedures and safety practices.
  • Professional Development: Identify learning needs, engage in ongoing education and training, and participate in team meetings and continuing education opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM). One year of recent experience working in a forensic or acute psychiatric hospital setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Skills and Knowledge: Current and updated knowledge of changes and developments in the practice of psychiatric nursing and of applicable Federal and Provincial legislation. Broad knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of behavioral, social emotional, and mental health/psychiatric issues in adults. Demonstrated organizational, facilitation, decision-making, and leadership skills.
