Job Summary

The Faculty of Agriculture at Dalhousie University is seeking a highly skilled Research Assistant – Engineer to join our team. As a research-intensive campus, we offer a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects that drive innovation and knowledge generation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research activities involving non-destructive testing of utility poles in a lab setting and periodic field activities.
  • Correlate electric signals to physical properties of utility poles and develop models to predict service life and maintenance protocols.
  • Research and identify indicators reflecting health conditions and assess the integrity of timber structures.
  • Complete research on the utilization of flax shives, including literature searches and experiments.
  • Carry out data analysis on large-scale data sets, including field data collection on density, moisture, and residual levels of wood preservatives.
  • Maintain and operate complex reactors and instrumentation.
Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in mechanical, chemical, or electrical engineering, plus two years of engineering experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Experience with model development, scientific literature review, data collection, and analysis, as well as supervising students.
  • Demonstrated excellent analytical skills, strong attention to detail, and organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Proven strong communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Ability to lift up to ten pounds on a weekly basis and walk periodically for up to six hours at a time in field conditions.
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver's license.
Assets
  • Experience in machine learning/data management.
  • Professional Engineering designation.
