About the Opportunity

Smith + Andersen, a trusted Canadian multi-disciplinary engineering firm, is seeking a highly motivated and proactive Legal Counsel to join its shared services team in Toronto.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide legal support to project teams and leadership, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations and mitigating risk across Canada.
  • Review and negotiate legal agreements and documents to protect the firm's interests and manage risk.
  • Draft, edit, and manage contract templates, as well as generate policies and procedures.
  • Manage project-related claims, including insurance claims and litigation, guiding project teams and instructing external counsel.
  • Collaborate with leadership, shared services, project teams, and external stakeholders to achieve business objectives.
Requirements
  • Five to seven years of broad experience in commercial and construction law, obtained in private practice or in-house.
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound legal judgment, problem-solving skills, and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to guide business teams through complex legal matters and train non-legal personnel on legal functions.
  • Experience in engineering or architecture industry considered an asset.
  • US construction/contract law experience considered an asset.
