Technology and Data Privacy Expert, Senior Counsel

Role Overview

This role requires an experienced senior legal counsel to provide strategic advice on corporate/commercial agreements, vendor agreements, business strategy, data, privacy, technology, and associated compliance and risk issues.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide effective advice to management on company strategies, products, processes, and risks related to data, technology, and privacy.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure that technology transactions align with business objectives and mitigate legal risks.
  • Prepare and negotiate legal contracts between the company and its customers for various lines of business, service providers, and employees.
  • Manage an assigned caseload, engage and oversee outside counsel when warranted.
  • Provide guidance and drive implementation on incoming bills or changes to existing rules/regulations affecting the company.
  • Offer continuing counsel and guidance on business strategic issues and legal implications of existing and proposed product and service offerings.
  • Provide mentorship and support to other members of FCT's legal team.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A strong background in law, preferably 5-8 years of experience as a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario or another provincial law society.
  • Experience in areas of law including data management and data governance, technology, privacy, fintech, and related financial services.
  • Excellent negotiation and drafting skills, with the ability to prepare and negotiate large-scale MSAs and SOWs in the commercial space with a focus on financial services.
  • The ability to provide entrepreneurial, pragmatic, business-oriented advice in a large, fast-paced environment with high professionalism and outstanding business judgment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to act as a lead lawyer in managing internal business relations across departments and client expectations.
