The Cost Estimator is a key member of the Estimating & Proposals team within the Program Management Office at Seaspan. This role is accountable for preparing detailed estimates for new construction projects at Vancouver Shipyards.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare accurate estimates for projects related to ship design, construction, maintenance, and repair, upgrade, conversion, and/or vessel life extension.
- Monitor the cost of work and prepare analysis for the Estimating Manager.
- Solicit bids for work to be subcontracted by distributing specifications and/or drawings, analyzing responses, and evaluating the best value options to support clear recommendations.
- Provide management with summaries of complex estimates, including overviews of work content, and risks and/or opportunities requiring special consideration.
- Maintain positive relationships with stakeholders, ensuring that Management are kept informed of the progress of work.
- Continuous improvement of Estimating processes.
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant technical or business subject area.
- 10 years of experience in the structured development of complex cost estimates, working in an engineering, manufacturing, shipbuilding, or other similar environment.
- Experience in the shipbuilding or ship repairs and conversions is considered a significant asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstration of exemplary business ethics, integrity, confidentiality, and honesty in all situations.
- Excellent analytical, mathematical, problem-solving, decision-making, negotiating, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to prepare accurate estimates. Ability to read technical drawings and interpret Contract and tender documentation requirements.
- Able to obtain a security clearance up to NATO secret.
- PC proficiency required. Solid understanding of basic Microsoft Office 2010 software suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, MS Project).
- Advanced knowledge in MS Excel is required.
- This is a full-time, permanent position with multiple operations and long-term projects, providing job stability.
