Duties and Responsibilities:

As a Laboratory Technologist at Carleton University, you will play a crucial role in creating and maintaining a safe and professional laboratory environment. This involves acquiring and maintaining proficiency in the safe operation of laboratory equipment and performing high-quality equipment and facility repair, maintenance, modernization, and fabrication using a broad set of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and computer application skills.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as a technical advisor to students, staff, and faculty
  • Participate in the University Health and Safety Program within the laboratory
  • Perform administrative duties associated with the position
  • Supervise students and student employees working within the laboratory
Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, you must possess excellent theoretical knowledge of mechanical and aerospace engineering principles, including knowledge related to solid and fluid mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials, control systems, and heat transfer. You should also have practical knowledge of associated skills such as analog and digital instrumentation, computer technology, and basic fabrication techniques like machining and welding.

Education and Experience:

A typical candidate for this position would have completed a 3-year mechanical engineering technology program from a recognized institute of technology or an accredited equivalent. Eligibility for certification as an OACETT Applied Science Technologist (A.Sc.T.) or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) is also required. A minimum of 5 years of work experience in a position of similar responsibilities, preferably within a university environment, is also necessary.
