Overview

At St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, we believe that every individual deserves to live a life filled with hope and recovery. Our Mental Health and Addiction Program (MHAP) provides comprehensive services to support individuals in achieving their recovery goals. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in this process, working one-to-one with individuals to support them in the development and achievement of self-determination, personal empowerment, and their individual recovery goals.

About the Job

This is a challenging yet rewarding opportunity to work with individuals who identify as Indigenous living with mental illness and/or addiction. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will be responsible for facilitating and coordinating peer driven/recovery-oriented groups utilizing the values and principles of a peer support/person-centred philosophy. You will also participate in ongoing professional development and continuing education to ensure your skills and knowledge are up-to-date. The successful candidate will maintain ethical and professional conduct in accordance with Psychosocial Rehabilitation Canada and Peer Support Accreditation Certification Canada in keeping with their respective codes of ethics and practice guidelines.

Responsibilities

* Provide one-to-one support to individuals to achieve self-determination, personal empowerment, and individual recovery goals.
* Collaborate with clinical team members to create recovery goals and treatment plans.
* Facilitate peer driven/recovery-oriented groups using a person-centred approach.
* Participate in ongoing professional development and continuing education to improve skills and knowledge.
* Maintain ethical and professional conduct in accordance with organizational policies and codes of ethics.
* Collaborate with community partners and stakeholders to facilitate connections and referrals to other resources.
* Organize community outings to research culturally-relevant community-based resources.
* Complete recordkeeping and documentation for health records and statistical data entry.
* Co-facilitate educational presentations and workshops on mental health and recovery-oriented issues.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have a strong background in peer support and recovery-oriented practices. They will have completed a Certificate in Peer Support Training from a recognized provider and have a minimum of 1 year of experience working in a mental health and/or addiction setting. Knowledge of trauma-informed care and personal lived experience of mental illness and/or addiction are considered assets. Additionally, they will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with individuals and teams.
