Job Summary

The Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to fill the role of Full-time Temporary Relief Coordinator, Distance Field Education. This position will play a critical role in developing, implementing, and evaluating field education curricula for the Virtual Learning Circles (VLC) and Distance Programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advisory
    • Work collaboratively with the Field Education team to submit requests for AHS placements through the HSPnet system and liaise with the team and AHS in relation to these requests.
    • Plan and implement the process for VLC and distance students' practicum search process, including creating timelines, providing information, and updating the field education database.
    • Work individually with distance students in the VLC and other distance programs to secure placements in their own communities and liaise with Field Education coordinators in other sites and from other Canadian Universities as needed.
    • Process, review, and assess agency applications for affiliation as a field placement and enter details into the field education database.
    • Obtain ongoing feedback from students, field instructors, and agencies about the field education process and field education placements for purposes of evaluating and improving our field education model and processes.
    • Support Calgary-based programs as needed.
  • Communications and Marketing
    • Provide effective and timely information, consultation, and support to field instructors, agencies, and faculty in relation to the field education program and related processes.
    • Work professionally and collaboratively with other Field Coordinators and members of the Social Work Community.
    • Liaise with FSW Student Services staff to obtain student information, such as admission lists and course registration.
    • Establish, nurture, and maintain positive and effective working relationships with agency representatives, field instructors, and faculty liaisons.
    • Manage and track information and processes related to field education and generate and disseminate reports as required.
    • Work collaboratively with the Field Education team and Alberta Health Services to implement student processes for securing placements with AHS, including submitting and managing student requests through the HSPnet system.
  • Strategic Planning
    • In collaboration with the Director of Field Education, support and consult with faculty liaisons throughout the practicum.
    • In consultation with faculty liaisons, regularly review and assess affiliated field placement agencies to ensure compliance with standards and criteria for field education and to improve the quality of learning for students.
    • As a member of the Field Education team, contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of an effective field education model, including participating in meetings and ensuring that adequate policies and procedures are established and followed.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • A degree in social work is required, with a preference for a MSW.
  • Experience in field education, particularly as a field instructor (practicum supervisor), and knowledge of university infrastructure systems are assets.
  • If the successful applicant is a social worker, current registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers is required.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office, along with superior administrative and organizational skills, and demonstrated strength and proficiency in writing.
  • Communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and establish good working relationships with students, faculty, field instructors, and agencies/community.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively, adapt, and be flexible and innovative in a complex, demanding environment.
  • An understanding of the key role of field education in social work education and the contribution that social workers and agencies make to a student's professional education.
  • Knowledge and expertise in formulating competitive strategies and practices, through an understanding of best practices and social service sector and student needs.
  • Strong understanding of social work agencies, field education, and how to leverage our program to a strategic advantage.
