About the Job

We are seeking an Environmental Health Specialist to join our Consulting Team in Victoria, BC. As an Environmental Health Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in assessing and monitoring workplaces and building structures throughout BC. Your primary mission will be to identify hazardous materials, including asbestos, and ensure strict implementation of health and safety protocols before and during any disturbance or removal of these hazardous materials.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct on-site assessments, inspections, and testing relating to hazardous building materials.
  2. Interpret and analyze sample results in relation to WorkSafe BC requirements.
  3. Prepare professional technical reports detailing assessment findings into written summaries with recommendations for better protecting workers and occupants.
  4. Coordinate and monitor abatement sub-contractors.
  5. Collect and analyze air samples for asbestos, lead, and other hazardous materials.
  6. Use and calibrate field sampling equipment and microscopes.
  7. Liaise with clients and sub-contractors to ensure health, safety, and hygiene needs are addressed and met.
  8. Develop and maintain positive colleague and client relationships.

About You

  • You possess strong communication and organizational skills, with an ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • You can work seamlessly with diverse teams, fostering cooperation and contributing positively to achieving collective goals.
  • Maintaining project workflow efficiently is essential.
  • You have the ability to write technical reports.
  • You are proficient with Microsoft Office products.
  • Availability to work outside core business hours and weekend rotations is required.
  • Extended travel (up to 2-3 weeks) in remote locations in BC may be necessary.
  • Fieldwork experience is an asset.
  • A related post-secondary education degree or diploma is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with health and safety legislation and guidelines is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with building systems (structure, envelope, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.) and structures is an asset.
  • Experience reading and interpreting floor plans is beneficial.
  • Experience working with environmental monitoring equipment is an asset.
  • A vehicle, valid driver's license, and insurance are necessary for regional travel.
  • Occasionally, employees undergo security clearances to access job sites.
