About the Role

Thorn Baker Construction is seeking a skilled Estimator to join their team. As an Estimator, you will play a crucial role in supporting the company's growth by preparing comprehensive and accurate cost estimates for construction projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyse project specifications, drawings, and other documents to prepare detailed cost estimates and proposals.
  • Conduct thorough quantity take-offs from drawings and specifications to determine material and labour costs for each project.
  • Utilise estimating software and tools to generate detailed cost breakdowns and proposals.
  • Obtain and evaluate quotes from subcontractors and suppliers, negotiating pricing and terms to ensure competitive bids.
  • Prepare and submit bids and proposals in a timely manner, ensuring all required information is included.
  • Identify and assess potential risks and uncertainties in project estimates and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates and proposals to clients and participate in negotiations as needed.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Surveying, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in construction estimating, preferably with a principal contractor.
  • IT literate (Microsoft, construction estimating software).
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills with the ability to interpret complex plans and specifications.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in preparing estimates and documentation.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal teams, design teams, clients, and subcontractors.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, materials, building codes, and contracts (particularly the JCT Suite).
