Key Responsibilities
- Support the instructional, behavioral, and social needs of students in an increasingly complex environment.
- Assist with planning, implementing, and reviewing individualized program plans to ensure students receive the support they need to succeed.
- Modify classroom materials to meet the specialized needs of students, promoting inclusivity and accessibility.
- Facilitate communication and language development skills in students, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
- Encourage positive interactions between students, staff, and the community, promoting a culture of respect and empathy.
- Monitor student conduct and intervene when necessary, using de-escalation strategies to resolve conflicts.
- Supervise students during break periods, bus arrival and departure, and in community settings, ensuring their safety and well-being.
Requirements
- Special Needs Educational Assistant Certificate or Child and Youth Care Diploma.
- Two years of related experience, preferably in an educational environment.
- Ability to work in complex environments requiring constant supervision of high-risk students.
- Proven ability to implement effective de-escalation strategies.
- Flexibility to undertake a variety of assignments and adapt to changing circumstances.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, both oral and written.
- Proven success in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with teachers, parents, and special needs students.
- Ability to perform physical activities, including lifting, transferring, and providing personal care as necessary.
Work Arrangements
Edmonton Public Schools offers a variety of work arrangements, including casual, temporary, and permanent positions. Casual positions involve hourly, on-call work up to 7 hours per day, Monday to Friday. Temporary positions involve long-term part-time and full-time assignments in excess of 25 cumulative work days in the same assignment and location. Permanent positions are eligible for advertised positions.
