The City of Thunder Bay is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team as a Tourism Development Officer II. This exciting opportunity will allow you to contribute to the growth and development of our city's tourism industry.

Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Manager Tourism Thunder Bay, the successful candidate will undertake moderately complex projects related to tourism and economic development. This will include participating as a member of a project team, undertaking a broad spectrum of destination development projects, and performing detailed analysis of tourism and economic development opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate as a member of a project team to develop and implement tourism and economic development strategies.
  • Undertake a broad spectrum of destination development projects, including research and analysis of tourism and economic development opportunities.
  • Perform detailed analysis of tourism and economic development opportunities, and prepare and implement related strategic and promotional plans.
  • Initiate and conduct discussions and negotiations with the private and public sectors regarding tourism and economic development opportunities.
  • Provide information to prospective entrepreneurs, agencies, and the community on matters relating to tourism and economic development opportunities.
  • Identify and promote improvement to and expansion of existing businesses or industries.
  • Complete projects jointly undertaken by the City and provincial or federal levels of government, or other partners, as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in economics, business administration, or a related field along with three years' experience in economic or industrial development; or
  • Diploma in business administration, or a related field along with five years' experience in economic or industrial development

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to function and contribute as an effective team member and to work independently
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to work with entrepreneurs and be knowledgeable of the relevant provincial legislation regarding municipal economic development;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers and current related software
  • Familiarity with markets and marketing, tourism and economic development opportunities
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement when dealing with confidential or sensitive issues
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health & Safety Act

Conditions of Employment:

  • Will be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation
  • Must have a valid driver's licence
  • Working beyond normal working hours and out of town travel (by land and air) will be required from time to time
