Electrical Research Engineer

The Engineering Institute of Canada is seeking an Electrical Research Engineer to join our team at the University of Alberta Power Electronics Lab (uAPEL). As a key member of our research team, you will play a crucial role in supporting both research and development activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on power electronics technologies and standards
  • Assist with electrical/mechanical design using CAD tools (Altium, Solidworks, Fusion )
  • Collaborate on experimental setups and aid in firmware coding for embedded processors (TI C DSPs, STM)
  • Organize and maintain test setups, ensure equipment availability and functionality, and perform troubleshooting, routine maintenance, and calibration
  • Develop, test, and debug embedded software, implement communication protocols (SPI, SCI, UART, I2C), and design mechanical parts using CAD software

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field
  • Proficient in CAD software (Altium Designer, Solidworks, Fusion ) for electrical/mechanical design
  • Firmware development (TI C DSPs, STM), including communication protocols (SPI, UART, I2C)
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills, with excellent problem-solving skills for troubleshooting experimental, equipment, and software issues
  • Effective communicator for collaboration with researchers, students, and partners, and strong organizational skills for managing inventory, maintaining records, and organizing lab space
