Spiritual Care Coordinator Role Summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a skilled Spiritual Care Coordinator to join our team at the Victoria Addictions and Rehabilitation Centre. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will provide spiritual support and guidance to individuals seeking recovery from addiction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one spiritual counseling to clients, helping them explore and address spiritual concerns, questions, and challenges related to their addiction and recovery process.
  • Offer spiritual support to clients and families in the event of the loss of a loved one during their treatment journey, helping them process grief and find meaning in their spiritual beliefs.
  • Offer spiritual support and counseling to staff members, fostering a culture of care and well-being among the team.
  • Pray with staff and clients upon request or when opportunity permits.
  • Conduct visitations to hospitals and institutions as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the program department to integrate spiritual components into spiritual care plans.
  • Develop, maintain, and oversee spiritual care programs and services to residents, staff, and community guests of the Victoria ARC.
  • May provide intake services, client assessment, emergency assistance, short-term spiritual counseling, ongoing case management, and/or other forms of direct service for clients applicable to spiritual care.
  • Assist in crisis-intervention, debrief, and spiritual care planning.
  • Facilitate/Officiate special religious services when necessary (i.e., memorial/celebration of life services).
  • Organize and lead workshops or educational sessions on spiritual topics, such as mindfulness, meditation, prayer, and the connection between spirituality and mental health, to empower clients with coping strategies and spiritual tools.
  • Facilitate meaningful spiritual rituals and ceremonies for clients, such as prayer services, worship services, Bible studies, chapel, meditation sessions, or healing circles, to foster a sense of community and spiritual connection.
  • Maintain accurate records of worship service and Bible study attendance, topics covered, and patient engagement to track spiritual care progress and outcomes.
  • Solicit feedback from clients and staff to assess the effectiveness of worship services and Bible studies, making adjustments as needed to enhance their impact.
  • Provide resources and support for clients transitioning out of the rehabilitation program to continue their spiritual growth and recovery in the community.
  • Collaborate with local religious leaders and volunteers to enhance the spiritual offerings and provide diverse perspectives during worship services and Bible studies.
  • Develop and maintain formal relationships with local churches; interact and collaborate with community partners and para-church organizations to promote, provide, and expand spiritual care programs and services at the Victoria ARC.
  • May guest-speak at Salvation Army Corps Churches or Churches within the community.
  • May act as training supervisor for Christian Studies and Theological school graduate-level practicum students.

Member of the ARC Management Team

  • The Spiritual Care Coordinator is a member of the ARC management team, representing the spiritual care department; the SCC participates in the process of governance and strategic planning.
  • Work with management team to ensure programs are aligned with the spiritual mission of The Salvation Army.
  • Deliver Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training with staff at the Victoria ARC upon approval of Executive Director.
  • Attend case conferences, staff meetings, and client interventions to update the team on spiritual care progress and collaborate on patient care plans and provide support to staff and residents.
  • May participate in committees in internal & external committees upon supervisor request and approval.
  • Know and act in accordance with the security procedures of the Victoria ARC and The Salvation Army to ensure safety and confidentiality of participants and information.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain written records and logs of activities (including activity reports and statistical information).
  • Keep up to date and accurate client case notes in keeping, respecting clients' confidentiality, and sharing the limits of confidentiality with clients.
  • Manage spiritual care budget and resources effectively.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of The Spiritual and Religious Care Policies and Procedures Manual and The Spiritual Care Program Plan in keeping with TSA Accreditation standards.
  • Prepare and submit reports, proposals, program evaluations, and/or business plans as requested by internal or external sources.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Recruit, orient, train, and supervise volunteers at the Victoria ARC contributing to the facility's services and programs.
  • Maintain accurate records of volunteer information, hours contributed, and areas of expertise to facilitate effective volunteer management and adhere to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Collect required documentation, such as Criminal Record Checks.
  • Establish clear lines of communication with volunteers, keeping them informed about upcoming events, changes in schedules, and any other pertinent information.
  • Conduct orientation sessions for new volunteers to familiarize them with the center's policies, procedures, and expectations. Ensure that volunteers are provided appropriate training to equip them with the necessary skills to perform their roles effectively.
  • Attend and coordinate volunteers for the Community Dining program.
  • Attend volunteer recruitment events to connect and recruit with individuals interested in volunteering in the ARC's programs and services.
  • Plan and oversee volunteer events and staff functions (i.e., events during the holiday season in December and January, volunteer & staff appreciation).
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Education/Certifications:

  • The minimum level of education for this role is completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of two academic years in a related field (Chaplaincy, Divinity, Theology, Pastoral Counseling, Spiritual Care, etc.).
  • Training/Certification in Addictions and/or Mental Health issues would be an asset.

Experience:

  • At least 1 year of focused experience providing spiritual care, counseling, or guidance to individuals dealing with addiction or in a healthcare setting.
  • Previous experience working in a rehabilitation center or addiction treatment facility is an advantage.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Support for and an understanding of mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
  • Knowledge of professional requirements for chaplaincy.
  • Demonstrates compassion and respect for clients and staff.
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the impact of addiction on individuals' spiritual well-being and the role of spiritual care in the recovery process.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to connect with individuals from diverse spiritual backgrounds and belief systems.
  • Knowledge of various spiritual and religious practices, rituals, and traditions to cater to the spiritual needs of clients effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including medical professionals, therapists, and counselors.
  • Strong communication and counseling skills, enabling effective communication and support for clients facing spiritual challenges in their recovery journey.
  • Familiarity with ethical guidelines related to spiritual care, confidentiality, and boundaries in a healthcare setting.
  • Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
