We are seeking an experienced Copy Editor to join our digital team at Canada's leading news site. As a key member of our editorial team, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our news and features content across various digital platforms.
Key Responsibilities:- Copy edit breaking, developing, enterprise, and feature news, as well as multimedia projects, data-driven stories, social media copy, video titles, and photo descriptions.
- Work with writers and producers to develop story ideas, assignments, and structure, and provide feedback.
- Identify and respectfully communicate gaps in a story; collaboratively work with writers and editors to improve the content.
- Package digital stories according to mobile-first considerations.
- Curate live story pages.
- Assist reporters in developing their digital writing skills.
- Assist in communicating digital news best practices.
- Uphold and contribute to best practices.
- Minimum five years recent experience editing in a digital news environment.
- Strong journalistic skills.
- Substantial experience copy editing, fact-checking, writing, and packaging news content.
- Understanding of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
- Proven ability to manage large volumes of fast-moving information.
- Ability to think critically and work independently.
- Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
- Cultural awareness and sensitivity.
- Open mindset.
- Stellar communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent online news judgment and ability to work effectively, collaboratively, and gracefully under 24/7 newsroom deadline pressure.
- Aptitude with text and video content management systems.
- Active user of social media platforms.
- Deep knowledge of Canadian Press style. Knowledge of style an asset.
- University degree or equivalent experience.
- Ability to work weekends, early mornings, and statutory holidays when required.
